So I am getting back into fantasy by dusting off my OnG. I played a lot in 5th and 6th back when tournaments were comparatively rare and did very well. Before I go on to tailoring my army list I want some advise on a big unit of wolfriders. I have a great center piece unit of 22 metal wolfriders. Seeing how 8th has changed I am not entirely confident they will do well but I must take them.
So this is what I was thinking, please critique but realize I am not going to take them out of my army.
21goblin wolfriders spear and shield 282pts
full command
Goblin warboss 92pts
spear light armor shield giant wolf
Magicwise I think the warboss needs to do damage so I was going to give him: Potion of Foolhardiness, Ironcurse Icon, and maybe a Potion of Strength to keep him cheap. I might put my ruby ring of ruin on him if I had no other place.
What are people's thoughs on great weapons, he would lose his shield and Init 4 is good for gobbos.
If not a great weapons, would a magic weapon be of use. Maybe striking if I dont take it elsewhere. Pairs well with potion of strength for that one turn of fun.
What about the Boss(Champion) it is nice he adds another attack and can take a challenge but is it really worth 10 points?

Loadout seems good, but might need some survivability that lasts longer than the toughness potion.
Great weapons are great (LOLOLOL), but it's really a matter of taste. I don't know what a goblin needs...
Champion is worth it. Because, simply, if your Lord gets challenged by something stronger than him (I would believe that's a lot of things), you'd want someone else to accept. If your Lord declines, he won't get to attack your opponents Rank-and-File. If he accepts, he might die. That's what the champion is for.

I guess I should note that this will NOT be my army general. Either a orc big boss or lord or orc great shaman will be the general so if this gobbo warlord dies bad things will not happen.

Even so, you still want him to attack your opponents rank-and-file in order to pile up combat rez. Even if nothing bad happens when he dies, you should strive to keep him alive and killing.

Since he's already S4, I'm slightly tempted to suggest the Goblin Warboss take a Sword of Striking. As you mentioned, it and Potion of Strength hit rather hard, and it's relatively cheap too (Only about, what, 35-40 points for the both of them?).
The main issue with Wolf Riders is that the basic riders, well, suck. Don't get me wrong, they're reasonably durable (T3 w/ 4+ Save isn't bad), but they have roughly the same damage potential as a similar frontage of Orcs w/ Shields, gaining one point of armor in return for a point of toughness and WS. Your Wolf Riders are mostly there to be buffed by any special rules / spells (Sneaky Stabbin' + WW in Flank = Horrendously Deadly, since now you're hitting around 55-75% and wounding 75-88% of the time), while the charge, ranks, flank, and character(s) provide combat resolution.
If you can, throw a Big Boss or two in there. Big Bosses suffer less for the presence of a Great Weapon since they're only I3, and a pair of them on Wolves should still run less than a kitted Orc Boss on foot.
As for the boss: He's mostly there for challenge-soaking reasons. Say your Wolf Rider unit (about 350-400 points right now, depending on Warboss kit and if another Warboss / Big Boss is present) must face some big bad character / monstrous hero. Normally, you would either take the attacks on the unit (losing a rank or two per turn, rapidly reducing steadfast potential), or throw your Warboss under the bus for 1-2 turns of extra steadfast.
The Champion buys you one more turn of extra steadfast, or - if the big bad you're fighting has a unit vulnerable to 4 WS5, +1 to hit, S7 attacks - lets you get more active combat resolution.

so two big bosses with great weapons and light armor are 106 points.
Would you replace the Gobbo warboss with 2 Gobbo big bosses. You net 1 extra attack, most at WS4 instead of WS5. Init 3 doesnt mater so they are all at str6. Same number of wounds total as a warboss and an extra wolf. Lose out on Ld 8 to Ld7. Better to take them out of heros than lords.
Or would you use a gobbo warboss AND a Gobbo big boss.

You'll want multiple goblin characters. They just don't survive all that well, so having a back up is needed.

yeah I am leaning towards 2 bigbosses in smaller games and a big boss and a warlord in larger games.
now that I cant run them 4 wide I would like to add 4-5 more models, too bad they are oop.

Can't you only take one potion, since both are on the EI list? Unless potions have different rules and I missed that.

Pretty sure you're limited to one enchanted item, and both potions are enchanted items. Like I said, depends if this edition removes restrictions on potions-maybe give him ASF sword and potion of strength, or higher strength sword with potion of foolhardiness. Either or.

do I add boys. Reading volley fire's rules with fast cavalry it would seem i could march and fire 15 shots. Is that worth 20 points?

You can't volley if you have moved.
You might want to put Gitilla on the unit, BS4 for the unit plus no move and fire penalty if you want to use bows. I don't have the book with me right now, but I don't recall there being a penalty for other characters to join Gitilla's unit.
In any case, wolves for me are barebones. Spear, shield and musician in units of five (two of them, generally). If I have some spare points I might give them bows as well.

Just tried it, 20 strong with a warlord and a big boss. The rolled a 15man swordmaster, a 20 strong archers, and then a 25 strong phoniex guard with BSB before running into the flank of seaguard and getting flank charged by another 15 sword masters. Everyone died but the warboss who ran and then rallied.
They did have the help of a boar chariot but still did VERY well. Automatically Appended Next Post: jouso wrote:Exergy wrote:do I add boys. Reading volley fire's rules with fast cavalry it would seem i could march and fire 15 shots. Is that worth 20 points?
