So, I just got accused of exploiting. My crime? Well I got sick of getting turn one deep striked right in the rear armour with my mech guard list. losing a leeman rus to dreadnought in turn one sucks, especially in my own deployment. So, predicting this tactic from a space marine player for the millionth time I decided to deploy my melta vet containing chimera in a box formation around my two leeman russ. A wrecked dread and assualt drop pod later and im apparently a douche for daring to block his dread with a 55 point transport. That contained some melta toting vetrans.

Your thoughts dakka? Was it beardy of me?

I wonder if he would have said the same about deploying a Basilisk with it's back against the board edge? Seems fine to me, I think he just needs to adjust his strategy, just like you did.

Valid tactic.

Not at all cheezy.

Your opponent needs to find some way to deal with it.

You are perfectly in the right, my friend. He had a drop pod that can go literally anywhere on the board and chose to drop it there. That is his fault, not yours.

Exalt, exalt.

I feel this stuff is the result of heavily emphasizing maxed out lists. People have this killer strategy in their heads when they build their armies, and everything interlocks and supports itself, but when something goes wrong, they have no idea how to improvise, and then they get whipped. And that can bring out the worst in all of us.

That's you playing smart. There is literally nothing exploitive about it; you put your rock near where he wanted to put his scissors. If he was a better player, he would have dropped that dreadnought somewhere else. Sounds like a whiny kid.

Er, he was late teens to early twenties, using a salamanders list using a regular tooled up dread and the character one. It didn't help that I had an officer of the fleet present, which staggered his other deep striking shenanigans to the point where it was coming in and getting nailed peice by piece. He did manage to kill a russ eventually though :(

EDIT: For those who asked, it was the character one that got ruined on my first turn. Which was cool as it ignores the additional pen of point blank meltas and makes me reroll stuff.

To the TFG, either nobody is a TFG, or everyone is. It looks like you have the latter here. If he's going to throw a temper tantrum every time you don't play with your miniatures exactly the way he wants you to play them, then just don't bother.

I would call this learning from past defeats and then improvising to counter the issue, now if hes too dumb to look at the board and say wow I don't have a easy back door to his Leman Russ maybe I shouldn't deploy there. I call your idea genius and say play on!!! As for the other guy I am glad this isn't RL and he's calling actual strategy or as one of his troops I'd frag him for being so stupid.....

It's a bit daft of him to expect you not to learn from past games, and to play the same tactics when it's obvious you've learnt from them.

If you reserve your army, your biggest risks are
1) Your opponent deploying to minimise your advantage
2) Your army being taken out piecemeal.

Normal, valid tactics here.

This is why deployment is important. If he was dumb enough to deepstrike himself next to meltaguns, he deserved it.

You win and lose games on deployments. My opponents tonight both badly misdeployed. My Necron opponent deployed vehicles less than 24" from a Stormraven carrying a Dreadnought with a multimelta. My tau opponent deployed his sniper teams on opposite sides of the table in Dawn of War and split up his suits, making a good third of his army useless as I rolled up one flank.

Yeah, not letting your opponent roll over you without effort is totally 'beardy.' You may not, but I've got legitimate reasons to usually have an extra pacifier or two stashed in my various jackets and packs. If he'd pulled that in a game against me I would've pulled one out and rolled it across the table, telling him he needed it more.

The guy you were playing against seems like a real turd. People in this game can be really sensitive though, I was playing against a friend and he used his razors to perfectly block my terms from assaulting while being able to fire his two 5 man squads at me. He immediately apologized for the move, and I was kinda taken aback because why would I be offended by someone making a great tactical move like that?
