Eh, I don't like most modern horror films since they rely too heavily on gore.

I liked Jeepers Creepers (including the sequel), but it wasn't remotely scary...I actually just thought the monster was bad ass.

Supernatural thrillers tend to disturb me more than slashers. The Mothman Prophecies is one of the scariest films for me, by comparison Saw is more of a lulz fest and slight admiration for the intricacy of the traps.

Best werewolf film ever is Dog Soldiers.

Spoiler:
I think it might be based on Matty's life

I must respectfully disagree, the best werewolf film ever is An American Werewolf in London, though I did enjoy Dog Soldiers and agree with your spoiler content as well.

As for gore, I don't mind it one bit ( big Romero and Fulci fan me), but...I do believe that gore for gores sake can get dull, the real hallmark of good horror is always the building of tension and " surprising" the viewer, and while a flying severed head may accomplish this from time to time, if that's all their is in a film the viewer will become quickly desensitized to what's supposed to be " frightening".

I was actually kind of creeped out by the first Cube movie. Just the thought that they're in a giant maze that changes constantly, there's only one way out, and there's a distinct chance that any given door you move through will kill you...

Then there was Cube 2: Hypercube.

Much as I hate to admit it, I'm really more into the torture porn genre than real horror. My favorite "horror" (quotation mark quotation mark) movies are the Saw and Final Destination films, just because some of the traps in Saw are chillingly well-designed and I love seeing the Rube Goldberg-style deaths in Final Destination.

A good old school thriller/horror is The Thing.

I need to watch more Horror, I could quite easily list all the horror films i've watched (and it wouldn't be very long) and if I listed the horror films i've watched out of choice (not for Sixth Form Film studies work or Uni work) the list is only 3 films long... But i've read millions of horror plot synopsis

Which horror films are actually scary? None of the ones i've seen, I would call scary. Seven is more disturbing than most of them.
As for Saw, only seen the first one, and I thought it was a pretty good film. But apparently they start getting more and more about the torture and traps, i'm not too bothered about that to be honest.

If you're talking about the John Carpenter version, I agree. Wonderful paranoia in that movie.

The Shining is also at the top of my list. I also liked the J-horror film Audition quite a bit.

I could see how that might leave a mark.

I've seen The Shining umpteen times, and yet I still start to cringe every time Danny's about to encounter those little girls. Holy cats, they're creepy...and I'm not even sure I can fully explain why.

To late...but you are 100% correct, Uwe Boll's ( which should have been the tip off the film would be awful) House of the Dead was bad...really bad, about the only thing I enjoyed in it was Clint Howard's schtick as the first mate on the boat, well...and the Asian girl.
Speaking of less than fantastic zombie films, I just watched " Humans VS Zombies" ( must have taken them ages to think that title up) and...wow...it almost made House of the Dead look good by comparison.

I'm not expecting much from the WWZ film, from what I've heard/ seen the book is for the most part being tossed out the window in favor of making a "Zombie action flick"...but...I'll reserve final judgement until I've actually seen the film.

FITZZ is back, hurrah!!

Anyway, let's get the ball rolling. What do people make of horror films with clear political/social analogies?

I'm thinking Invasion of the body snatchers (Communism in america)

Various zombie films in the 1980s (HIV scare allegories or am I reading this wrong?)

Or the modern zombie film that reflects western society's loss of confidence in itself and this constant fear that the world is going to end.

I love Hammer horror as well especially, Plague of the Zombies and the Devil rides out. No point asking Fitzz if he's seen them, but what about everybody else?

DINLT, would you like my expert Film Studies opinion on that? (Feel I should establish, I am not an expert.... But I have written a fair few essays on horror films/themes etc)

Really, most horror films (films in general) are representative of some kind of social or political anxiety.
Vampire films are/were the ones more commonly associated with HIV.
Most of these representations, aren't going to be so blatantly obvious they effect your viewing of the film, but they are probably present (but then it is up to the individual to read what they want from the film, its not necessarily going to be right or wrong). Something I found quite interesting, that we did at A Level, was how German expressionism (which quite often ended up being horror) was used to very clearly represent the negative feelings in the country after WWI. That kind of thing has pretty much always been present in film.

And on the topic of German Expressionism, I highly recommend Nosferatu (the original Dracula film) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Both are technically horror films, although you won't be at all horrified, well the theatrical acting may horrify you a little....

For me it would be the paranormal activity series. Not the best, but all a good watch in my opinion. I like how each is set before the last, tracing the story to its beginings.

This is a signature. It contains words of an important or meaningful nature.

i havent seen it in ages, but i really liked R-Point (a Korean film i believe).

Now saying that, i am really NOT a Horror fan (watched poltergeist 3 aged 10 in a hotel full of mirrors....did. not. end. well.) but this actually drew me in.

I read the IMDB page on WWZ and its a fail from the premise. I love a good zombie movie, but the one their saying is WWZ is just taking 1 story line about the beginning of the outbreak. I'll wait for it to hit hbo.
