So it's that day again, 04/05, Star Wars day, has anyone had themselves a SW themed day or getting up to any force related shenanigans?
Personally I listened to the whole John Williams Star Wars sound track whilst at work and plan to watch the original trilogy later but not much else unfortunately?!
May the 4th be with you!

I only knew about the pun, not that it was an actual day.. I'll have to persuade the woman to let us watch Empire Strikes Back.

I'm orthodox, I only celebrate the original trilogy.

I wish I had a shotgun and a jar jar binks dummy to shoot at. That is the real legacy of George Lucas.
People rate Lucas, but I've never known why. Spielberg carried him in the Indiana Jones films, and it's no surprise that the best star wars film (Empire strikes Back) had no creative involvement from Lucas - he didn't write or direct.

I wouldn't say he had no creative involvement in Empire, he wrote the story and was executive producer. I do think that he's not that great of a director though. I think his strength probably lies in producing. If George had produced the prequels and teamed up with a good director, I think they might have been a lot better.

Spielberg begged Lucas to let him do a prequel...and the rest is history.

Like many directors, Lucas's best work was in his younger days (even Spielberg's current films pale in comparrison to Raiders, Jaws, ET etc).
I think there is some element of truth in the view that smaller budgets force people to be more creative and produce more entertaining films.

I don't even want to start to think about how much better the prequels might have been if Spielberg had directed them.

To be fair, this doesn't really comprise any creative involvement. Writing the story does, though, so fair play on that.

It really depends on the situation. Some executive producers have more creative input than others, obviously some are just putting up money and get their credit put on the screen. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that George Lucas was a bit more active of an executive producer, especially considering he wrote the story. Actually, I kind of doubt that. Keep in mind that Episode I came out in 1999, and Saving Private Ryan, an excellent Spielberg film, came out in 1998. Indiana Jones might not have been that good, but it came out in 2008. In the late 90s, Spielberg was making some really good stuff.

Executive producer is the guy who turns up once a year to the meetings and walks out with a suitcase full of cash. Ridley Scott said that, or words to those effects.

Yes, a lot of times that's true, but some executive producers are more hands-on than others. All I'm saying is, I'm willing to be George Lucas was a bit more hands-on for Empire, especially considering he also wrote the story.

He may have written the story, but thank god he didn't do the script. As Harrison Ford once said: "you can write this, George, but you sure as s**t can't say it!"

Yes, that's for sure. Lucas definitely should have gotten someone else to do the script for the prequels, I don't think many people would disagree with that (Except for George himself, that is).
