My list is going to be a FUN and Amusing Chaos Renegade Guard List.

The rest of the list isn't really important but its all either in Chimeras or on Unicorns.

Do i want 3 Deathstrikes?

2 DS and a Manticore?

2 Manticores and a DS?

or 3 manticores and a slap on the wrist for thinking of taking a Deathstrike?

Nonsense! Take the DS missile for gaks and giggles, and defend with the might of your guardsmen! Besides, what Chaos Lord wouldn't want doomsday weapons?

Since DS missiles don't always work when you want em, take three to maximize the chance of at least ONE going off. I find Manticores are nice, but not amazing, and they have a tendency of missing like all other artillery units. With a DS missile, at least you'll nearly always hit the target you aimed for!

Well deathstrikes are terrible if you want to win, but are really fun with a D3+3" radius blast lets you potentially wipe out massive swathes of an enemy army with a single lucky hit (up to 6" in radius, 12" diameter blast). If you really don't mind losing, I would say go for the deathstrikes (as in all 3) if even one or two hit you will kill a lot, if all three get the chance to fire you can easily kill 1000+ points worth of enemies.

Edit: Also there is no center of blast, so you can engulf an entire squadron of vehicles in a strength 10 AP 1 blast against their side armour.

I love playing against Deathstrike missiles.

I'm not a guard player, so I can't talk about how tactically efficient they are, but I can tell you right now that they are incredibly fun to play against. Their unpredictability and absolutely devastating nature make them absolutely spectacular for fun games.

Some of my fondest gaming memories involve deathstrike missiles. Once upon a time, a a Deathstrike fell perfectly on my cluster of venoms and Raiders, and every single one of my half dozen plus some skimmers passed their flickerfield saves. Statistically hilarious.

I wouldn't take them to tournaments, but I'd take them to the FLGS every time.

If you have a few spare points, give the missiles Camo Nets, make them a bit more survivable. Remember in Apocalypse games you can replace the S10 blast for a Vortex 10" warhead!

It brings me to 1845...

And I can't really take anything off.

I could lose a squad of rough riders at most I suppose

Deathstrikes are incredible for finishing off the enemy. Just run enough anti tank to crack open transports and such and when the missile fires, it will kill everything.

Camo cloaks will help your missiles survive, and I advocate using sentinels to provide cover for your missiles.

FLICKER FIELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! *shakes fist and twirls moustache"

I've used 5 in a friendly game once, and they are literally so hit and miss it wasn't even funny. One took out a big parking lot, another only killed 2 out of roughly TEN DE SKIMMERS (hence the flickerfields hatred) and the others did pretty much nothing. Although part of that was I didn't know they ignored smoke cover saves, so next time I'll be ready to call their guff...

That said, they are hilarious to use and can make a game quite interesting. Just be ready to hide them and get ready for every antitank weapon in the opponent's army to be pointed at it.
