Hey Chaps and Chappettes,
Firstly let me apologise for the awful photo quality. They were taken in really poor light and I'm not yet constructing a nice light box until I move house early next month.
I am currently working on a Necron army project for the Sentinels of the planet Thanatos (great story in the Necron Codex). For the scheme I've decided I want a really dark looking scheme with red highlights to all weapons. (Yes they could fit in well with the Necrons from the World ATI 6870 quite well...).
All of the troops will be sporting the deathmark 'cycloptic eye' head for a really sentinel like feeling to the whole army.
This was a test model I have thrown up using a Zenithal highlight scheme used in a number of the other threads. The camera has over exaggerated the brightness sadly and surfaces are appearing way more shiny than they actually are! I will add some more pictures of the Lychguard batch once finished as these were painted using cans rather than my airbrush and the new results are already better even at basecoat stage.
Base (although you can barely see it) is a fantascape 20mm necruin base. I can give my full recommendation to them, they look fantastic and are really nice to work with.
Couple of additions coming up
1) I didnt like the weapon effect. I'll be making it much darker, non metallic and blended with red force edges.
2) The new GW shades seem to leave a very glossy effect. I'll be watering down the carrouberg crimson used on the shoulders significantly more next time to get rid of that overly shininess.
Will update the thread with some much better photos next time!
Cheers
Jed

I'd say keep the weapon's look or match it to the shield. I know edge highlighting has its wow factor but looking at grima and gritty as it does, it looks like he's going to beat the Bejesus out of someone.
You're not the first to remark about the glossy look in the new paint range. I've been keeping away from it myself.
Looks good in total. dark Lava basing would really make them stand out.

Nice colour choices. An army of those marching out of the dark clouds of Imhotek's storm would scare the bejeezus out of anyone. I like the weapon as is but they are your 'crons so go with what makes you happy. I couldn't get a glow effect in the recesses of the hyperphase swords to work for me (on the shield, worked fine, but not the swords for some reason) whereas as yours are now the red glow works.

I like what you have done so far. I've just started necrons myself, and am still in the process of tweaking my final scheme.
I think the mini deserves better pics, as you've said, I'll reserve my judgement until then.
I really like the idea of the deathmark's heads though, I've never been a fan of the awkward 'crests' on the higher ranking models. The red eye suits it well too.

You know that most of it is
I've ordered in some Vallejo Model Air reds that I'll be using to do the red blending on the weapons. Should be here this week. I've done some testing with the GW shades more and can confirm that even watered down or using vallejo thinners, they still maintain a glossy finish. It's just a completely undesirable effect (especially as their charts now recommend you then place a glaze OVER the top of this after for even more insane shiny finishes).
Basically if you are looking to use these new shades like you would have done your favourite wash from the previous paint set, expect any area in which the wash pools to finish up extremely glossy...Not impressed at all with these.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I've begun Airbrushing the other 4 now. some WIP below
AB primed in VMA - Grey Primer
First directional spray of VMA - Light Grey
Second directional spray of VMA - White
will edge highlight tomorrow and then it's time to lavish on some Badab.

Ok more updates incoming. Below I've got some photos of the first necron lord from Zenith through the the reds and metallics being done.
First pic is the Lord having his 2nd Badab Black wash over the highlights
Some more of the lord with more of him done:
And a last one here to show the difference I want to make between the troops. As with Necron lore, those that have come out of the great sleep the most intact have risen to the highest ranks of the royal court. For that, I wanted to ensure that the colours of the elites are the brightest, those directly below the royal court (lychguard/immortals etc) I want to have the red Regalia but for it to be much much darker. Finally, the Warriors as stated in the codex you can barely tell apart from each tomb world. As per such, only the glyph and eyes will really be a prominent red.
I want to make the res orb much much much lighter or even change the colour all together. Suggestions are very welcomed on that as I am stuck between several ideas.

Couple more updated photos. I'm off from Wednesday and have a mega painting session planned so expect a lot more updates. Anni barge is coming along and the Lychguard have some weapons now. They need a couple of little touches to be finished, mainly some top edge highlighting. Anni barge needs the OSL fleshed out now I have more surfaces to take into consideration. I need to highlight the stirrups for the pilot and gunner also so they look a bit flat right now.

Ok had a busy one today!
Finished off the Anni Barge as per below and then got my mits on one of my favourite forgeworld models. Deciding that a standard base just wouldn't cut it, I set about cutting up a landspeeder, setting it in putty and then going to town on it with the airbrush and some pigments. Alas the result I'm pretty pleased with, truly an awesome model the Tomb Stalker.

Hope you like. There will be some more warriors and immortals hopefully by Sunday.

Won a C'Tan Shard over the weekend and had some time to get it and a few of the Immortals into ship shape. Wanted to keep the immortals a lot more simplistic and dark looking. As per such, the red on them is an absolute minimum (just the glyph and eyes)
The Guass Blasters are pretty evil looking with the red tubes in!
The C'Tan shard I went in with mixed thoughts of how to paint it. Naturally wanted it very dark looking but also to have an almost gloomy 'energy' feel to the model. As per such I went about combining the red of the army mixed in with a gloomy purple blend at the bottom of it's robe to give a more ethereal, dusk like feel to it (else I felt it would look like a greater deamon with all that red)

Also re-iterating my hatred for failcast. The models look like bloody sponges...

Heylo,
Long time no updatey. I've got some more Necrons to post up, but I am coming to the end of a tether with them right now. I like to keep projects fresh and interesting, otherwise I am painting for the sake of it and then the effort levels will dwindle.
I saw an interesting blog from 2007 about a guy making IG MechWarrior stuff. As an avid lover of the BattleTech universe, I grew up playing the MechWarrior games and then thought to myself, how cool would it be if an IG army fielded Battle Mechs rather than Leman Russ??
Draw any reasons you wish? Maybe their planet is heavily swamp/marshy and not great for tanks. Maybe it's dense cityscape where the maneuverability of a tank is a disadvantage?
Well whatever reason, I had a general plan in my head to make a command mech for a showpiece. If the idea takes off and you guys would like to see more, I may consider doing a new army with them.
For this particular model, I settled on 3 kits to build it with. A Chaos Defiler (Important for making the legs), A Storm Talon (Cockpit) and a Sentinel (Mainly for the crew).
This added in with some plasticard and a looted barrel from a vanquisher and I have most of what I need for the first attempt.
Only the one photo to upload so far as I am at work, but here is a current work in process of the first Mech.
Let me know what you think.
