If you want me to agree that you shouldn't point a submachine gun in the general direction of a child, I'm happy to do so

If his father had been dead then the right thing to do would have been to honor his mother's wishes. But his father was alive and wanted his son back. IIRC pretty much no one wanted to send him back to Cuba but every single court ruling came back the same.

Now the big boys will just move their operations to states with no sales tax, right?

Another race to the bottom situation.....

I don't think that's relevant. The relevant part to my thinking was the 11th Circuit court ruling that only his father could petition for asylum, and he was a living relative and he wanted his son back. It would have been the right thing to do to return him regardless of it it was Cuba or Connecticut.

Besides, like HRC said, what difference does it make anymore, anyway? Feet dry expired so now the Cubans follow the same policy as anyone else.

It means that if you live in a US state (or city) with a sales tax and buy something online from an out of state vendor with no physical presence in your state, the state can now require that vendor to charge that sales tax and collect it to provide to the state. For instance, if I buy a $100 TV in Los Angeles California from a local retailer, I'll pay an additional $7.25 to CA and $2 to LA, for a $109.25 purchase, while if I buy it on Amazon.com, I may or may not have to pay shipping, but I definitely wont pay sales tax, until this ruling that is.

What this will mean is that local retail wont have to fight online retailers that can avoid that tax, but it also will make it almost impossible for many smaller businesses to comply as they wont have the means to manage all 5 digits worth of tax jurisdictions, and Amazon and the like will probably end up fighting this and finding ways around it tooth and nail, while state governments are going to be looking at this as a huge revenue booster.

I guess I don't think we should return children to any country we have openly declared war on and are currently in the process of prosecuting hostilities with until the end of said war. However to my knowledge we were not in a state of war with Cuba in 1999.

I think it may end up forcing states to lower sales taxes to compete for online sales.

I'm sure its more complex that how I'm about to explain, but I feel States with high sales tax will lose out to the frugal online shopper who shops around online vendor sales tax rates. It probably won't effect small sales, (well I wouldn't care at least for a few dollars here and there) but when you get to big ticket items, some of those 6+ % sales taxes most definitely give folks pause when another vendor has sales tax rate of 0% to anything less.

Will be interesting to see how it goes from here and how states will react.

edit: As a brick and mortar store, I tentatively feel like its a win for me, but I'm in a state with 6% sales tax. My main industry competitor (Revzilla) already charges sales tax, so it might be a wash.

Exactly. So the argument doesn't work.

So you do agree the lives of US citizens have improved since the start of US Empire, great! Because a lot of the above mentioned was sponsored by that, especially getting rid of the mustache people.

The mustache people were a threat to you. That was 1945. The only powers that still exist from that war are the UK and the US. Its been THREE generations.

You're missing the point. 45 kickstarted a golden age for the US economy and the population. Business profited the most but living standards improved a great deal. The problem is that technology has allowed business to shed the people that helped build them up. US hegemony allowed for that golden age, US political unwillingness to tackle wealth inequality led to the current situation. For business its still a great time thanks to Trump's tax cut, but that is Trump making the rich richer, not the world forcing that upon you. That isn't going to change once the US pulls back from the world, if anything the people who aren't rich might be more adversely affected, because they can't move money around like the rich can. The current US wealth level is tied up in its hegemonic position.

I'm going to quote this for emphasis. The fact that US politics is pretty messed up isn't due to US interventionism in other parts of the world, it's because your domestic political system is all kinds of fethed up. That isn't going to be solved by going full-tilt isolationist.

from my understanding the vendors locations is totally irrelevant, only the purchasers location. So, if im understanding the ruling right, if I buy from your webstore coming from Oregon, I wont have to pay sales tax and you wont have to charge it because my state doesnt have it, but if your next online customer lives in Los Angeles, youll have to charge the 9.25% sales tax and then remit the 7.25% to the CA treasury and the 2% to LA yourself, while the local walk in cutsomer pay your local 6%.

As a brick and mortar, if your primary customers were local, it should be a big win for you. If your primary sales channel was online, it will likely hurt a lot.

That makes a huge difference.

Still may be a catalyst to reduce or at least standardize(hopefully on the lower end) sales tax throughout states?

May be a big hassle in the short term then, until the kinks are worked out. I'd have to read up on it more, I was just reading headlines on my feed at work.

No one said anything about communism, Fraz just brought it up as a deflection. You jumped on it because you have shown no interest in making rational, intellectual arguments but instead on phrases that have little to no relevance or value to the conversation. You can do better.

Yes, he brought it up. I explained in a very quick sentence why it is that he sees people treat fascists one way and communists another way.

Forgive me, but I’m not very well educated on economics. So does this mean shipping for physical products will now require sales tax, or does it mean any online purchase whatsoever coming from US websites will require additional charges?
It means that if you live in a US state (or city) with a sales tax and buy something online from an out of state vendor with no physical presence in your state, the state can now require that vendor to charge that sales tax and collect it to provide to the state. For instance, if I buy a $100 TV in Los Angeles California from a local retailer, I'll pay an additional $7.25 to CA and $2 to LA, for a $109.25 purchase, while if I buy it on Amazon.com, I may or may not have to pay shipping, but I definitely wont pay sales tax, until this ruling that is.

I see. Thank you for clearing that up.
Does seem like the kind of thing that would cause some waves. I wonder if this might affect the current international trade conflict as a sort of second option to tariffs. Online businesses shipping to and from the US can make additional money for the state governments. Not as significant as trade, but still something.
EDIT: Missed the part about the purchaser’s location. Guess this makes international involvement somewhat moot.

And Capitalists have done worse than both. Not to mention Monarchists. The big difference between Fascism and Communism (or any other political ideology) is that Fascism as an ideology calls for atrocities to be committed. Communism does not, it is a perfectly normal political ideology. Many terrible crimes have been committed in the name of communism, sure, but many terrible crimes have been committed in the the name of pretty much every political ideology in history. Again, where fascism is different is that those atrocities are an inherent part of it. Fascism is an ideology of hate that calls for the subjugation of "lesser" peoples. It can't be compared to Communism, which only calls for the equal distribution of the means of production. That is why Communism is ok, and Fascism is not. One is inherently violent and oppressive, the other has been abused to justify violence and oppression but is not inherently violent or oppressive.
There are plenty of good and peaceful Communists, Communist parties and Communist governments. In contrast, there has never been a good or peaceful Fascist, Fascist party or Fascist government.
