So.... How would 3 monoliths in 2k lists fare? Init cheesy, under powered, OP, or fine?

i got the impression monoliths got somewhat nerfed in the new dex, and that they were not worth taking....

so what about 3 of them makes them OP? ... aside from AV14..?

They're probably the Necron heavy unit I'd be most glad to see in the new codex.

They just don't build Monoliths like they used to.

3 Lith's isn't gonna leave a lot for other things like troops and such.

What does the rest of your list look like?

Annihilation barges are way more bang for the buck. Spiders too for certain builds.

Some armies would steam roll over you at 2K and 3 Liths (Dark Eldar comes to mind - ouch)

Reminds me of three LR. Sounds like fun, could be PURE HORROR for some lists, and laughable against others (Lance spam, Melta-pods). I don't know how expensive liths are, but they can't be cheap, so that's going to drain a lot of points.

Ultimately, if you like it, I'd say do it! ^_^ I could easily imagine that making for a very interesting game.

As an owner of Monoliths I have to say monoliths are not great and a big part of that is the position of the dooway on the model. Since its recessed you lose significant space for disembarking troops and range on the doorway gun.

I expect some 6th ed change will improve them quite a bit tho so maybe hold fire on the trip Monolith lists for now.

yea, monoliths seem to have taken a big hit, but it makes sense the old way to play necrons was monoliths so people who already played necrons woudl already have wat they needed with the new dex. GW likes to move plastic so make the monolith less effective and add new hotness in the form of new models... got to sell those new kits. maybe they'll improve come 6th edition though it is possible as supposedly vehicles are going to get more differentiation. but by then people will have jumped on board wtih the new models and new players will have joined necrons so it'd be ok to make them more powerful and therefore ... sell even more plastic

In theory seems like itd be nasty, but for 600 pts you could do a lot meaner things with the new Necrons.... Now small things like if the whip were still AP-2 (Bring your draigowing a walkin, and get nuked to gak with 3 particle whips) then hell ya 3 or 2 used to be seen on the table all the time. Or even if you could still suck models out of close combat through the portal. But the simple fact that the whip can now be taken out on a weapon destroyed is enough to make you want to spend 200 pts each elsewhere.

Monoliths are still amazing for one reason, being able to pull your troops through them.

Simply toss 3 troops in a list, add a relentless lord for one unit, maybe two, add some royal court nonsense and toss in some other stuff, like stalkers.

You end up with troops that should never get into assault, and the ability to twin link your whole army, because 3 monoliths, 3 stalkers and 3 troops can fit in a 2k easily.

I personally would run to Doomsday cannons and a either a annihilation barge or a spyder that's just me though. Unless you plan on DS into their deployment zone and off loading an entire army of either immortals or lychguard w/ tek/lord heavy I wouldn't waste the points on that many... but for that you could just as easily use a Scythe to get them there for much cheaper.

I wouldn't say it's overpowered if you're sinking over a third of your points into them. Will be tough to take out unless the other army is dedicated to fight them, but they're big, slow, easy to see targets, and they can mishap when they deepstrike.

Is there a range on the ability to port a unit through the door? Because then you could have some fun 'lolno' moments as your opponent walks through the fire to the monolith with its 2 units of troops nearby, only to have them be whisked away to safety on the other side of the board, and suddenly they have trudged through all that fire to kill just a monolith...and then they get to do it all again...twice more.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I've always felt Monoliths play nicely with either the AV 13 vehicles or C'tan as they can provide cover for/block LOS to these units. Also C'tan have a a couple toys to help protect the Mono (Lord of Fire).

In fact, if I was going 3 Monos I would get all the toys I could from the C'Tan and Crypteks to protect against fast moving/deep striking Melta. Once you have that headache sufficiently addressed the only real fear is lance spam, but a couple turns of Night Fighting can go a long way in mitigating that as well.

In short, I think its a workable strategy, just not as tested as Cronie generals have been getting over the disappointment of losing their Nigh un-killable Juggernaut as well as playing with all the new toys.

I do have a feeling 6th ed will boost "Heavy" in some way though.
