So a friend of mine (happygrunt) wants to start up Infinity, and so I though, "Eh what the heck, Ill check it out..." it was right off the bat that I could tell this is much different then the GW games... but I kept looking around and found 3 armies I like to look of. Nomads, Combined Army, and Yu Jing... I also see they have their main rules on their website. I was wondering, is there some "Army book" of sorts in this game system? Something with info on all the units, backstory, etc? if you could direct me in the right direction that would be great.

Also: how do each of those 3 armies play? are any of them a difficult beginner army? an easy begginer army? how are the mechanics for each of those armies? any information would be most appreciated!

Even though the use of each army may vary depending on the sectorial you choose, the basic characteristics of that factions are these:

Nomads: Hacking based. Nice Medium Infantry with cool stuff such as the Adhesive-Launcher, E-Maulers (E/M mines), repeaters...
Yu-Jing: Serious Heavy Infantry, Close Combat specialists (you will love Monofilament weapons)
Combined Army: Lots of cool combos, weird but powerful weapons (i.e. the Sepsitor, that can turn enemy miniatures into part of your band)

There are two rulebooks (Basic and Human Sphere) with lots of fluff and cool illustrations though the rulebook version available for download does not have the fluff, only the rules.

Army lists are also free downloads.

For backgrounds on the factions, you either need to sort through the slow website to find them, or buy the books.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

The best advice really is start off with whatever faction's miniatures appeal to you the most!

Easier said than done, of course, as they all look so good!

I've only managed to avoid collecting one faction: Yu-Jing.

I've got large forces for most others, and a small Haqqislam force.

No Yu-Jing though... Must resist...

You can find individual backgrounds for troops on the Infinity web site as well. There's just no overall fluff.

If you go to this page, there are some video-links towards the bottom with background for each faction: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/440048.page

Bloody hell Alpharius, you sure work fast! I'm sure I remember you posting some kind of 'what to buy first?' comment?! (Unless I am going mental?)

I've been collecting for a while.

What's really pushed me to move forward now is the fact that soon I'll have my own house with plenty of gaming space AND I've been looking for "something else" for a while now, and I've really grown tired of GW's yearly antics.

And there was some of this too.

And really, who can resist the awesomeness that is... the Jotum?

That model 'forced' me to add in PanO... and so it goes!
