I was thinking, would it be possible to give a dirty white look to a chaos space marine's armor using only washes? I've looked all over for pictures or tutorials of doing this but I have seen none. Before I buy lots of washes, I would like to make sure that it is even possible, so I ask you dakka, is it possible? have you done it? does it look halfway decent?

You really shouldn't use washes to weather the larger areas of a model (SM legs) They work great for a subtle way to bring out the details on a model, but on any surface that is round or smooth they tend to run and dry in uneven ways, which pretty much just looks like a stain. Certainly a necessary technique to learn, but I wouldn't use it alone for ALL of your weathering. Try it out on some smaller areas with lots of detail (weapons)

pete hit the nail on the head there.
Too many flat surfaces to get a good look and it will just look like a stain.

Things like weathering powders and pigments do a pretty good job on their own.
However, a quick and easy way is drybrushing.
Just keep it in the same lines as your basing colours and types.

ie: Desert base - brown drybrushing then a lighter brown over it to give a dusty look.

Urban base - same idea as above, but with greys.

All depends on how weathered you want a model to look really.

If you want to get a dirty white scheme going, prime in white. Maybe give it a second coat of white if it looks a little uneven, although if the white does look a little thin in places that could maybe work to your advantage. Anyway after your white prime/basecoat is down and done just cover everything in badab black wash. After that if your not happy with it try mixing badab black and gryphonne sepia together and give it another wash.

Not really sure if it would be effective when said and done but it sounds the goods. At least in my head it does.

I have only seen 1 person do washing to good effect on marines. . . .sadly as people have said it is extremely hard to make the models look good while trying it out. Now Dipping might works but once again it is a hard thing to do.

I think this is exactly what I need. I will post up pics when I get white primer
