Subject: GW and cookies (more sinister/harmful?)

I know the previous topic on cookies was not all that serious, however I came across this post on TMP. Is GW really capable of doing that?
The new transparency legislation has thrown up some interesting finds. GW will not let you access their website without accepting "innocent" cookies that are there to help you.
Buried away in their list of cookies is this one:
gws-feature
This cookie will permit us to disable the homepage features settings on your browser.
This cookie is not currently being used, although we may use
it in the future.
Yes you read it correctly. You have just given GW permission to disable your homepage settings whenever they feel like it. Google "Piriform CCS" if this upsets you enough to clean up your cache.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |

I'm not really concerned. If they actually did something heinous like disabling my homepage settings, I'd get upset, but I'm not going to start trying to cross the bridge before I get to it.

I'm not really seeing a problem. At worst, GW temporarily hijacks my homepage, in which case, I change it back.
More likely, your browser will throw up a message asking if you want to change your homepage, at which point just simply say 'Uh, no'.

New EU rules come into force soon. This new law requires any EU website that uses Cookies to ask your permission before it can put a Cookie on your computer.
Nothing sinister, nothing different from previously, just now they have to ask your permission.

Yeah I have mine set to scrub the cookies everytime I close down mozilla. Means everytime I go to GW I have to click on that blinkin message, but no other worries from me.

Forgive my ignorance here, but if I scrub my cookies... that would mean I'd have to log back into Dakka every time I visited the site?

Yes, login settings for Dakka and every other site that can remember login data do so via cookies. So every time you clear them, assuming you purge them all, you will need to log in again everywhere. Note this does not extend to stored password or autocomplete data.
There is absolutely no reason that anyone should be dumping their cookies on a regular basis in 2012 for typical home internet use. If you were inclined to do so because you have some rational security related reason to do so; most modern browsers now have a toggle to automatically dump cookies when the browser is closed and you should not need a third-party utility for that.

Yeah, thats what I have on, and rapport and my system keep all my logins safe on the system. So although I am not logged in when I come online, all I need is to click the login in box for my username to appear and log in, takes a few seconds.
Just bugs me when I have hundreds of ad trackers telling me what I want to buy etc when I log into certain sites.
