Hey all. Starting up a Carcharodons list and I'm looking for some ideas for basing them. I think I am stumped by the overall gray scheme of the army. I'm trying to brainstorm bases that will let the army stand out on the table but not be too garish at the same time. Maybe a more scenic style with static grass and brownish gravely bits? What do you guys think? Would love some tips and pics of your bases to help the process.
Has anyone here tried or succedded in using the water effects on a standard 40k base? I'm wondering about doing a marshy looking theme on the bases and saw the big bottle of "water effect" in my LGS.
Nice choice for an army. Please post pics when done. As to the basing, I would say use something like skulls and carnage everywhere. They are Carcharodons, after all. I've never used water effects, but would say to give it a shot.
My understanding is that the Carcharodons were masters of void warfare, boarding enemy ships and the like. Is that correct?
If it is, then it might be cool to use industrial/space hulk bases, with lots of wires, grating, and exposed metallic elements. I think it could work, as it wouldn't contrast too strongly with the grey of their armor, but the metallics would serve as a good contrast.
Of course, I could be totally wrong on this point, as I am loopy from sleep deprivation.
i hate static grass!! some green flock and heavy brown gravel would be my choice... maybe a grass tuft if your really keen on grass... but yeah, lots of skulls and dismembered bodyparts would be fitting their theme
"industrial" basing would certainly work, so long as it isn't too greyish - either go for the Star Wars / 2001 ultra-clean white look, or the rusty corroded look
Otherwise, I would go grab yourself some black sand and base with that. Matches the grey well enough, but still contrasts enough to make your guys pop (On top of keeping to the Void/death/empty space concept that would be space-hulk).
Like this, but copper/gold hue
Dude, excellent idea right there. The price of all the components you've got are less than $5. And do I also see some old sprue as well? If you prime that in a rusty red (Rustoleum red-rust primer) then base coat black or dark grey, then take a wire brush to it.... highlight....oh the possibilities...
EDIT: ADDED:
Just did some research on Carcharadons and such. They're so bad-ass I'd consider swapping my SW for normal marines so I could do Carcharadons... if for nothing else but for lore and the FW miniature "Tyberos the Red Wake." Sorry, had to spaz out nerd style there for a sec...

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?
fenrir...completely understand. I lso really love the Minotaurs and the Executioners as well. Thanks for the great ideas folks! Really liking what you are all coming up with.
Per their history there is nothing atating they prefer void combat or are particualrly adept at it over other Chapters. I think the main theme with them is they are brutally efficient.

Ah, sorry about that. Might have been one of the old "Space Sharks" chapter fan websites muddying up my memory. I remember now that they were a Chapter given leeway to patrol the extreme edges of Imperial Space.
I still think a metallic grill/mesh/planking base would look good, though.
2nd image down the page, site is working on a "Counts as" concept. This is a wasteland/dirt basing (looks like the guy used actual dirt from the yard outside, looks rockin' imo):

Nice to see someones reading it
Your bang on, that is mud taken from my garden then dried and ground up till its effectily dust. PVA then dunk the model in the dust and when dry clean up the feet of the model with a DRY paint brush (I can't emphasis the dry part enough!). Tese days i also then seal the surface with a coat of the new Citadel medium to hold it together without making it too shiny.
Here is a better angeld picture of one of my knights with the same finish (pre-Medium coat)
.... All that said though, I think the grey deckplating really suits the colours and style of the Chapter, and even if they arn't supposed to be water specialists, I still think they carry it well.
I thought the Carcharodon's deal was that they operated on the fringe of the galaxy, striking up from below the galactic plane like a shark attacking something on the surface of the ocean? That's the impression I got from the FW blurb about them.
I'd definitely go with the spaceship decking/industrial theme. With lots and lots of gore. Almost enough gore to make Worldeater say "ok that's a bit much."
