Just out of interest how many people who play miniature table top board-games would actually call themselves a nerd or geek or both or neither.

I don't play but I'm definitely a geek.

People who are neither, or don't care about either term, wouldn't make a distinction to begin with or care that there is one.

Geek.
Over here, if one has a more technical aptitude over a gamey one, you are considered more "geeky" than nerdy. Geeks tinker with electronics/computers. Nerds play D&D (and get-a-lifes* play magic)

Started out with electronics at 12, moved into photography at 15 - didn't start gaming until 18 or so. Still tinker more than play.

*I must thank William Shatner for this amusing SNL sketch that mercilessly and mirthfully took the piss out of Trek fans everywhere - and those of us with a sense of humour nodded to ourselves. Those without, ranted and raved.

The common understanding of those two terms to my knowledge are the opposite of that. Geek: more sociable, less intelligent, less interested in computers, more interested in collecting / playing mmorpgs, rpgs, less interested in advanced trading card games e.g. Yugioh, less determined / strongly opinioned. Both are often involved in minature table-top games.

I am chromedog's definition of a Nerd. I'm fine with that.

I'm both selfish and rational. I'm scheming, secretive and manipulative; I use knowledge as a tool for personal gain, and in turn obtaining more knowledge. At best, I am mysterious and stealthy; at worst, I am distrustful and opportunistic.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

I call myself both. I have long since started to turn what was once an insult (or still is, for some) into something I affiliate with pride.

Then again, I'm working in a company where this goes for 90% of the employees, which probably makes it easier to pull off. Still, I think that society has long since started to shift away from the old cliché to something new, likely due to the financial successes that some nerds/geeks have accomplished, and because there's so many of them that they have become a viable audience for the media and other businesses, whose attempts to court them automatically make these people "more accepted" by the general public.

For my self both and nither at the same time. I can quote whole sections of Lord of the Rings (books) to PC hardwear tweeking. I can make cool stuff from almost any thing (baring turnning a paper clip into a plasma reactor ). I play video games yet love my bicycle.
I've been called cool, a geek, a nerd, a dork, a jock (I was, made cherry coke come out of my nose) and far far worse.

Ribon fox, you say you are neither and both, however why does also being cool or a jock make you not a geek pr nerd? Can geeks and nerds not be cool?

Rockerbike, you can see from when I defined the differneces between nerd and geek what i mean by both of those terms.

So, I am nothing like either.

Neither if I have to be honest.

But hey, its entirely dependent on how you define geek/nerd/other?

Right?

Definitely a geek. Nerd just sounds almost derogatory in comparison. You should probably have a poll in this thread...

I'd need to see a proper definition of each along with a poll in this thread. Also, there aren't enough pictures of weird al in this thread.

I have had difficulty defining these in the past. I would probably consider myself as both. I play table-top games, am a huge star trek fan, and my other hobbies include astronomy and birding...on the other hand, I am a biology major/chemistry minor who would freak out if I were to get less than an A, which I haven't yet in college (I'm not bragging, just showing I fall into both nerd and geek categories).

I've been called both, but that's because I'm a fething genius. I'm not sure if I actually fit either one's definition, besides filling the intelligence criteria.
