When I start an army I enjoy making a background story for it.
I also enjoy giving names to my army commanders and other models/characters of worth.
For example My Orks are lead By Warboss Lockjaw Da Deal Maka and Big Mek Zapzog Da Oiler . My Tau commanders name is Shas'O Dar Zuran'Ki.
Do any of you name your commanders and/or other characters? And if so what are they called?
|
Ork WAAAGH Zapzog: roughly 4000 points and ever growing. Tau Cadre of Zuran'Ki: 3000 points. Grey Knights Interdiction Force Galeon : 2500 points. Tyranid Hive Fleet Crateria: 2500 Points. The Host of Hadrekon: 1500 points. Catachan 44th Swamp hunters. 800 points.
2000 points Skaven Army. Arcsqueeks Horde 1000 points Vampire Counts Army. Duke Valmai's Court. 1000 Points Dwarven Army. Bhor Grimhammers Throng. Planning to get some Ogres later this year.

I play Tyranids in 40k.
This means my opponent's get to name them.
Most of those names are auto-filtered though.
I am working on it for my Fantasy army, though.

Commander Martin Andrews, of the 91st Schrott Experimental Regiment reporting for duty.
Thats the name i gave my commander in my IG army. Most of those i play against never hear his name and he is currenlty not modeled. but he plays through the short storys i make for my Reigiment. Otherwise his command tank would be my Baneblade "Thunderfury"
Every tank in my army has a name otherwise and gets one after completion. shall i list them?
Otherwise the only named troopers on the ground are 4 guys,
Bob and Steve my Tech Preists. (Bob has the Gear axe and Steve has a drill-like device), i just anemd them that off the top of my head one day and it stuck. its as simple as that,
Private Jules: one of my plasma gunners who always kills a dreadnought when they are played, if he "dies" to the plasma gun he uses he gets a medal afterwards in the medical ward, then again he gets a medal for killing a Dreadnought with a Plasma gun anyways lol.
Lietenant Rodgers: a single Kasrkin trooper who survived dropping into the rear flank of a space marine detatchment. with his melta gun killed, 2 predators, a rhino and a REALLY pissed Space Marine Captain. out of all my Kasrkins the name swaps to whoever does a similar feat.
Edit:All the Tanks/Vehicales
Vanquisher: Dead Eye (Flak 88 turret), Longsword (Aircraft dozer blade and oversized hunter killer), The Hammer (Super Cannon and auto loader)
Battle Tank: Foe Hammer (excesive weapons), The Reaper (4 legged salvaged tank), the Banshee ("screaming projectiles" )
Demolisher: The Shatterer (Sonic Cannon), Burning Vengance (Rhino- Russ)
Exterminator: Steel Fury (Hover tank)
Executioner: Electrocutioner (Telsa Tank), Solar Infernus (Extensive cooling system)
Erradicator: Thunder Guns (additional armor plates and multilaser bolted to turret)
Punisher: The Paladin (Laser beam Tank)
Hell Hounds: Blazer Runner (Commander out of hatch with flamer), Seething Hatred (Converted from Chimera + extra fuel tanks)
Banewolf: Biohazerd (German Light tank with chem equipment), Toxin Tractor (Wee tractor with sprayer and paint pot tank)
Chimera: Marines Dept (Razorback turned Chimera)
Manticore: Apollos Fist (Plasma Flare projector/ different chassis)
Deathstrike: Final Word (MIssile has extra large fins)
Basilisks: Skull Shatter (few additional armor plates), Micro Basilisk (physically smaller tank with supports to increase width), Hand of Redepmtion (Scratch Built)
Venddettas: Tornado (Helicotper), Sky Hammer (Additional Weapons/Repaired landing gear)
Malcador Annialator: "Old Ork Crusha'" (M3 Lee convert)
Macharius Vanquisher: Dreadsaber (M60 tank with additional weapons and super structure+ turret)
Baneblades: Thunderfury (extensive additional weapons and front sponsons), Koloss (E-100 German Super Heavy Tank), KreigsGott (Maus German Super Heavy tank)
Shadowsword: Ashbringer (forward casemate)
Minotaur: The Guardian (T34/85 hull with upper super structure and cannons)
Super Weapon: The Harbinger of Conquest, 280mm American Atomic Cannon refitted for service including additional armor and weapons.
Atlas Recovery Vehicale: Draggin Wagon (Ork Battlewagon given a trailor and operated by Guardsmen)
Laster Destoyer Tank hunter: "Bad Kitty" (Older edition model, i can't tell what edition), "The Surgeon" (Stugg 3 tank destoyer, can't find him but i know he's around)
Hydras: Aircleaner (Chimera with quad AA shoved into the turret+ guardsmen operator), Whirlwind (Basilisk hull given a Flak Panzer quad AA turret)
Sentinals: The only "Sentinal" i have named is the Hellwheel, Uniwheel attack bike. the other 3 don't have names (armored sentinals, 2 with plasma cannons, 1 with lascannon)

I always name my characters. I usually come up with the name and backstory while assembling and painting the miniature, and in doing so, some of the core background ideas tend to transfer into the model itself. Likewise, the model itself could inspire parts of the character, too.
My Khorne Lord is named Achaeus; his name evolved slowly over the years, starting as Archon (though this led to confusion with Dark Eldar Archons), Archeon (which was too similar to WHFB's Archaon) and then, finally, Achaeus. In fluff, he came to his position by leading a massive revolt against his former master and, unlike his unintentional namesake, was successful but badly injured. He trapped his former commander's soul and bound it to his axe, which occasionally lashes out and kills one of his followers in retaliation for his treachery. The model is a heavily converted Huron Blackheart (as seen in my avatar), and counts as Kharn.
Other Skull Champions in the army either derive their names from various Latin adjectives, such as Validus ("strong") and Ferus ("feral"), or have completely fabricated names, usually in a Latinised or Hellenised form (I wanted them to be different to the usual guttural-sounding names that many Khorne players give their characters ).

Nice to see so many people giving proper names to their models. Ive dabbled a bit with trying to write short fics for my Tau commander and his two wingmen. ( since their a 3 man crisis team ) but ive been less then successfull ad it. Still i enjoy reading what other people come up with. And its cool to see how some names evolved over time

I don't give my commanders names, but my friends have in the past (exactly zero of them serious). Our resident BT player named his two dreadnoughts "Dreddy" and "Freddy", Our guard player had a LRBT named "Old Faithful" (and some others named other things, but I can't remember them). Our DE player had a grotesque named Freddy too, and wrote a few stories around his shenanigans with the archon. When the BT player started IG, he got a Basilisk in a trade, and named it Isildur. For some reason.

I enjoy naming characters. I also come up with names while working on the model, as well as back story. Sometimes I already have fluff and back story for a character I'm modelling. For example, I have a bunch of chaplains (terminator, jump pack, and bike) that all represent the same character taking different war gear for each mission, Markus Kaayvan. While my lesser geared foot chaplains represent a few different guys.
Currently I'm building two predators, and while working on them I am working on coming up with names. I am magnetizing every possible bit for them, so I have some time. I have a list of possibilities, but haven't decided.
I have a friend who has named each of his models, and even gone as far as to paint their names on the bases of each. I thought about something like that, but am nowhere near creative enough.

I've named all my characters, and created fluff for all my armies. Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

There are some really cool names in there. Mustve taken a long time to come up with them all
I'm currently making up some good names for my more notable ork units and vehicles. I named my new burna bommer Da Burnynator. i painted the name onto the fuselage.
When i finish the Dakkajet and blitza Bommer i will write their names on them too. The jet will be called "Maksemum Dakka" and the blitza's name shall be "Git Killa"
Fluffwise my Ork army travels across the galaxy aboard the looted space marine battle barge they named the "Kingdom Krusha".
Not a name but something funny i painted on my battlewagons front ram: "We'z dun brake fer 'umies."
