I'm working on a pre heresy chaplain for my night lords.
I'm wondering if pre heresy chaplains always wore black or if the had the option of legion colors?

My night lords have the standard midnight blue scheme with lightning bolt details. Would black stand out too much?

Thx

Depends on how "pre-heresy" you are going...

I would say that Black was a mandated color, but that doesnt mean it is universal. Like anything else in 40k it is malleable. In the C:BA niether the Chief Librarian or High Chaplain wear a shred of blue or black. In the Night Lords I would probably use a LoTD model as a base, paint it the dark blue and do up the skulls and bones.

The black is a codex astartes thing. I think you could safely put him in standard Night Lords attire with a skull helm and/or crozius

For my Raven Guard I have been doing shoulder pads and some small accent areas in the designated colors for auxillary characters with standard colors (apothecary, librarian, tech-marine)

Since I am doing the pre-heresy colors for my DA, everyone is black already, so I don't have this problem xD
My librarians are green though...as well as my calgar (luther)

Umm.. aren't Chaplains kinda restricted to the Word Bearers in the Pre-heresy time frame?

POST Heresy when the Emperor was deified then chaplains became trendy.. right?

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Actually, although the Chaplains originated in the Word Bearer's Legion, after the Council of Nikea they became disseminated throughout the Legiones Astartes to enforce it and keep an eye out for psykers. They wore the colours of the WB legion, and its how Lorgar was able to recruit so many to the Heresy.(The First Heretic, False Gods, Horus Rising et. all) Not ALL Chaplains were in on it(Deliverance Lost), so the short answer is yes, they WOULD usually wear the WB grey, but not necessarily

They were around after the council of nikaea I think. They didn't have the emperor-worship thing going at the time, they had more of a role of a morale officer and tactical council.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

I got the idea for the night lords chaplain from the dark king audio drama. (it's literally a one line mention)

I like the idea of legion colors with black shoulder pads. Hopefully he'll blend well enough with the army but people will still be able to quickly see that he's a chaplain.

Thoughts?

However, be cautious not to include any bones etc on the armour. Reason being is that they have this to "mimic the Emperor on his Golden Throne" in the present era,and well, he wasn't on the throne then.

Interesting factoid I've never heard before. Where does it originate?
