Hello all! I'm currently doing a digital media course, and one of our assignments is to make a website that teaches people something. I chose to make mine about tutorials on assembling/painting miniatures, since it's a topic I have some experience with and can enjoy for the next twelve weeks. Right now, I'm just after some basic information before I start actually making said site. If anyone feels like answering the following questions, I'd really appreciate it!

What do you expect to find on a miniatures tutorial site?

What would you like to find?

What sort of tutorial layout would you prefer?
- all of the tutorial on one page
- the tutorial split into separate pages for each stage/step

What sort of colour scheme would you prefer?
- light text on dark background
- dark text on light background

Do you prefer tutorials to be:
- text & images
- video with audio
- video with captions
- a mix of everything

Would you like to be able to leave comments/questions on each tutorial?

Are there any other tutorial sites you like to use? If so, what are they?

What screen resolution do you generally use?

Do you generally have your browser maximised when viewing tutorial sites?

What browser do you use?

Thank you very much!

Go with your gut. A good designer doesn't just know how to make the code work for them, but how to make an aesthetically pleasing site.

Videos are the most informative for painting tutorials, as pictures simply don't convey the application of the paint.

Don't be lazy. Make sure your site is pleasing to the eye at all resolutions in all browsers. I know it makes life a whole bunch more difficult, but the practice is absolutely necessary if you want a career in web development.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

Advanced techniques like OSL, NMM, Wet Blending, airbrushing, pigments etc. There are way too many sites and tutorials that cover the basics.

What would you like to find?
Out of the box thinking. Using experimental techniques and perhaps proper reviews of paints in direct comparison to each other. Too many biased paint reviews out there IMO

I think it depends greatly on the technique being used. Some things require video to show the process, other things like NMM can be done step by step with pics.

Would you like to be able to leave comments/questions on each tutorial?
I think a section for Q&A on each tutorial would be nice

Are there any other tutorial sites you like to use? If so, what are they?
I generally use Youtube for 90% of my tutorials, and Dakka for the other 10%.

What screen resolution do you generally use?
1600x1050

Do you generally have your browser maximised when viewing tutorial sites?
Yes

What browser do you use?
Firefox like the rest of the civilized world.

If you know awsomepaintjob tutorial channel that is the kind of information I am looking for. Using of advanced techniques and not just following the colour scheme of the box. Simple conversions would also be good. Plus being able to comment and get answers regarding the problems I am having following your tutorial would probably help

Also started a tutorial in how to paint blood angels

Thanks for the replies so far!

@Kaldor: The main reason I'm asking these questions isn't to use the answers to decide how to make my site, but for the market research section of the assignment so I can justify to my lecturers the design decisions I make, with data I've collected and not just "I went with my gut". Nothing to do with laziness. I'm already in the habit of making sure my sites are compatible across browsers/resolutions, heh.
