How do you make yellow look good? I've seen a few models posted and they look great, but anything I paint yellow (i.e. blood angel helmets) don't look near as good.

I'm using a tan base with a brown wash. I really don't care for the results.

The rest of my figures look great (at least for me), but I havent put the heads on because they look so bad the way they are painted now. I'd like to finish them, but I need some good advice for painting the yellow helmets.

Maybe someone knows a link to a tutorial?

I'd really like the help.

Thanks.

PS: I'm not trolling, if this has been covered somewhere else, please give me the link. I did a search and came up with very little, but I figure there has to be some form of a tutorial/information out there somewhere.

It really depends how bright you want the yellow to be. Its a very light color with low pigmentation so you will have to paint several layers of it in order to get a uniform finish.

Whenever i paint yellow i always start with a basecoat of Iyanden Darksun ( not sure what the new paint name is ) Then apply some bad moon yellow ( again youll have to look up the proper new paint names. i simply cant remember them yet ) in two layers. this usually produces a good clean finish. for the yellow i use a minimum amount of water as this will make the paint even thinner.

I was using Tamiya yellow, but I was thinning the paint in an attempt to get even coverage. Maybe I got it too thin because it takes many coats to get it to look even close to decent.

What works for a highlight? Just adding white to the yellow base?

What works for a wash?

Vomit brown and wash with dyvln mud. Highlight again with vomit brown an highlight again with dwarf flesh and a final highlight with elf flesh. Looks neato to me.

When highlighting yellow i usually use a mix of yellow and bleached bone. the bleached bone gives a slightly warmer look then adding pure white. The new lamenters yellow glaze works wonders too. I highly recommend it.

I was always told to undercoat a brown or light brown, and gradually build up to full yellow.

The new GW yellow base is great.

Regardless of what other techniques you might decide to use, I believe that basecoating your yellow with an airbrush, or spray can is the best bet. You get a solid, even, coverage in one or two passes.
I did all my Badmoons like that and it made my life oh so much easier.

More Dakka has a great tutorial on it too.

Good luck!

heres how i do mine as i like it to look a more muted tone rather than a plastic colour

base coat the model black, i never use white as this makes bright colours look like they are plastics and black makes everything else easy to paint

i paint all other areas on my models bettor i do my yellow as i don't want to ruin it painting a darker colour

so on with the yellow, base the area with calthan brown. go over this with tausept ocher, leaving a little calthan in the resesses. next give the whole area a coat of ogyrin flesh.

when thats completely dry go other again with tauseppt leaving a little of the washed tausept showing, finally a layer of islyan darksun to finish again leaving a bit of tausept showing this is far as i go with mine but to highlite i would mix in a little bleached bone

hope this helps
