Hello there!

So yeah, been a long time since I posted here. Real life managed to get in the way (for the better and the worse!) but I've now gotten the 40K bug back again and working on my Tau. Cos I think they're awesome. I've found some folks near me in the same sort of age bracket who play too, so I figured its about time I got a list together! I'll start a painting blog for them soon enough, but for now... listage.

+++ Doomsday's 1500pt Tau (1480pts) +++

Selections:

+ HQ + (112pts)

As you can see I'm a little shy of the 1500 mark, but I've used pretty much all the models I have, so if anyone has any recommendations for little changes here and there, I'd love to hear em!

Cheers

Right off the bat before we get into this list.........

Individual point tallies are ILLEGAL on Dakkadakka and you must remove them. You should not simply cut and past the battlescribe/army builder txt to here.. You need to write it all out yourself with NO points values.

On to the list though it is a pretty standard list. nothing obviously out of place and horrible.

You can give the Shas'el a Targetting Array.

You could promote your MP/PR to have leader and give him a TA aswell...

Thats is ALOT of Pathfinders for 1500 pts. I would drop it to 6 total and spend the points of boosting your Suits to 3 per squad instead of 2 or increase the amount of XV88's.
other than that...

Your list is solid.

I've removed the list for now, will repost when I get home from work without the points values. My bad there, and thanks for the heads up!

(Just realised I had read through the 'all up' posting rules but not the specific rules for this part of the forum. Consider me now educated)

Thanks for the comments too, I'll get round to those once I've re-upped the list.

Yeah, I was aiming for a fairly 'familiar' list. Having not played a single game of 40K in the past 15 years, I wanted to start with something well documented. I know Tau probably aren't the best army to be returning with, but I'm too bloody stubborn for my own good sometimes.

I left off the TA on the 'el by mistake actually. Now rectified.
Teamleader Fireknives with TA sound good too. I'll add that in on the next go around.

I had a feeling I was going a little overboard with the PFs. So 1 team of 6 and add a Devilfish to one of the FW teams? And on that subject is it any real benefit for FW transports to have Multi-Trackers?

I really want to do 3 man suit teams, simply because I love XV8's. I just dont have enough models right now. In the meantime is there anything to be said for running 2 Hammerheads in 1500pt games? I know I have another one of those kicking about!

Thanks for the comments

Personally, I have a mild man-crush on broadsides, so I would probabloy switch out one of the the pathfinder teams and piranha for another team of Broadsides.

Spend your extra points on another shield drone for your commander. Consider running Plas + Burst Cannon suits for your commander and the squad he intends to join. They are cheaper, and more effective against heavy infantry. 12 Markerlights seems like overkill at this points level, I would considering dropping to two teams of four, and making your commander and one squad into PR/BC suits, saving you points in order to fill out your suit squads.

Also, 6 fire warrior's aren't going to scare a cat, let alone a squad of Paladins. I would consider dropping a Pathfinder Team and a fire warrior team, and taking more kroot. A fully fleshed out kroot bomb (20 Carnivores & 12 Hounds) is only 212 points, paltry compared to some hordes, and gets a frightening number of attacks on the charge. If you (in the future) managed to field two of them, they become a 64 model blob that simply MUST be dealt with. Something no other troops choice in the Tau dex can offer you.

In my signature I have a link to a Tau Mathhammer running article/information thread that I worked on a while ago, if you'd like, check it out!

Good luck! For the greater good!

I do plan to add more Broads to the army. Who doesn't like broads?
But I hear you on the man-crush. I too have such a thing for VX8s. The worst thing I ever did was look for them on eBay. Now everytime I see a badly painted/stuck together XV8 I have to re-home it. My wife is starting to worry about me.

This. This is good stuff. As much as I want to run something dependable and something that everyone knows, I like the idea of running slightly less used suit configs. And thats an excellent article Cotton. Consider it bookmarked and trawled through. I'm going to knock together a (hopefuly!) improved list over the weekend and see what the Tau community out there thinks.

Thanks for your help chaps!

If you like non-standard configs consider the airbursting fragmentation projector.
It is my all time favorite Tau weapon- it has done butt-loads of damage this year. s4 ap5 lge blast, no cover, pinning, indirect fire if you need it.
This little weapon (on a bs5 platform) single handedly can equip your list with all the horde control you need.
CIB (cyclic ion blaster), pumping out 6 bs5 rending shots can be a nice partner (as ranges are matched at 18")

ABFP is fun but better served on a BS 3 suit, as all your bs does is reduce scatter.

CIB is marginally more effective but less efficient than a BC

CIB
.83 rends +
.83 wounds on t4 + another
.83 wounds on t3

vs marine (/3 power armour)
1.11 kills MEQ (at bs5)
2.5 kills GEQ

BC
1.67 wounds on t4 + another
.41 wounds on t3

0.56 marine kills (at bs5)
2.1 kills GEQ

15pts vs 8pts (7pts diff) largely negligible in the context of the entire list, esp on the more durable HQ platform.
Sorry to math it out, for my own uses. Yes CIB is more effective at killing MEQ/GEQ/TEQ, equally as efficient at killing MEQ (more efficient at killing TEQ) but less efficient at killing GEQ.

Agreed, if you fail to outmanouver cover, CIB lends less purchase.

I would argue that +2bs for reducing scatter on the ABFP is incredibly useful. Usually the difference between plating the equivalent of a direct hit, as opposed to 2-3 hits on the edge after scatter (at bs3).
