Subject: Is there an official size for an Objective marker?

Long story short, I'm looking to make some cool objective markers for my IG army, and I was wondering what the official size for an objective is. At my store, we usually use poker chips, which are about the size of a 40mm base. Is this official size, or just them using something that's easy to find? I've also seen bottle caps, dice boxes, quarters, empty bases, etc used.
Any help would be great. I'm sure a 60mm is too big, but I think a 40mm would look about right. What do you guys think?

There isn't an official size. The objectives that are in the 40k counter set are 25mm base sized, but I've commonly seen objectives up to 40mm large used in average games.

ok cool thanks, that'll let me put a few guardsmen and some scenery bits on a single base. I'm thinking of a gun emplacement with a guy with a heavy stubber, a commissar, and a wounded flag bearer. Shouldn't be too hard to cram on a 40 mm base

Yeah, I've heard this as well. Nova and Adepticon use 40mm objectives, and I've heard this is common elsewhere.
Of course, there is no one size, and, to be honest, it doesnt' really matter. You know, in advance, how big the objectives are when you're deploying and moving towards them, so it's not like there's going to be any surprises, and the rules state that the objectives have to be a certain distance, which usually means edge of the objective to edge of objective, giving larger based objectives no extra advantage.
Personally, I like my objectives on the smaller infantry bases, but I really wouldn't care if it was other. Perhaps if they were like dinner plate size I might make a fuss, but anything on a GW base wouldn't really be much of a problem.

i think as long as they are all the same size, it dosent matter. ive used, coins, pokerchips, converted 40mm bases, spare models from other armies, even certain points on terrain features.
as long as they are all clarified the same, and explained before the game it dont matter. but the 40k counter set is a pretty good deal, as it has a ton of counters for everything, including a bunch of objective markers.

Me and my buddies have been known to use the bottom or top halves of defilers, "wrecked" vehicles, and other large things for objectives. As long as you and your opponent agree on where you measure from, you can pretty much use anything. That being said, as mentioned above, when you're playing an official game, there may be requirements on them, so I'd ask your FLGS or local GW what their objective standards are.

I know that assault terminators and steath suits come with them and they're 28mm sized if that helps.

Agree, the counter set is a great deal. Also helps greatly with opponents who tend to forget or "forget" damage results on their vehicles.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

A 40mm base is the most commonly seen size for objective markers. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, so be sure to post a few pics of the finished markers

The ones I make myself are 40mm, and it is mostly what I see when out and about.
However it should be noted the GW official green clear plastic ones are tiny, barely normal 40K base size.
I think as long as your opponent agrees, size isn't so much a factor. Just make sure both sides are using the same size.

I use WHF High Elves. There can be up to 6 of these LOS-blocking impassable terrain pieces on the board...it can change the dynamic somewhat. Certain parts of the board are now literally impassible to tanks, for example.

Yah I always thought 28-40mm were the "official" size. I use 2 teleport homers from terminator assault boxes, and a spare land raider sponson if I need more than 2.

I've used Interceptor autocannon emplacements, 40mm mini-dioramas, the teleport beacon from the SM terminator set...
As long as it's nothing much bigger than a dreadnought base should be fine, really, bigger stuff is more situational, I'd say.

The only "Official" size i've seen mentioned is in the Apocalypse rulebook, but I think the wording is that they "recommend 40mm" size, not you MUST use 40mm sized. Add in that the counters in the GW set are about 25mm, and I come to the conclusion that you should use what you want, unless your tournament says otherwise. I also use the Teleport Homers from the terminator sets: 3 on 40mm bases, and 3 on 25mm bases. Just make a few each of 25mm and 40mm and keep them in your mini case. A boyscout and a 40k player is always prepared!
