Article

Cody Green, a 12-year-old boy from Lafayette, Indiana, was granted one last wish before he lost his battle with leukemia. Green was made an honorary member of the United States Marine Corps, and even given navigator wings by the military, which said he had shown "strength and honor and courage" during his battle against cancer. One Marine wanted to do more for the young man.

Cody's father, David Snowberger, said Sgt. Mark Dolfini stood guard at his son's door at the hospital for eight hours straight the night before Cody died. Dolfini said, "Marines don't do this sort of thing for acclaim. If we all just did something like that ... just think of what an incredible legacy that would leave for Cody."

Cody was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only 22 months old, and had successfully battled a recurrence of the cancer three times. However, when chemotherapy lowered his immune system, the cancer attacked his brain.

Cody's father said he never complained about his treatment or care, and always said "thank you" to his caregivers. A line from Cody's obituary reads, "He never asked 'Why Me,' and fought the illness with grace and humility."

A thought a positive story would be a nice break from all the shenanigans.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Very moving, it must have helped him keep his spirits up in his final hours

Just because someone dies doesn't mean that nothing good can come out of it. The positive element in this story is the outreach and empathy of other people to try and make this kids dream come true before he had to go. Would it be more pleasing to you if the story was "no one did anything for kid who died from cancer" and we all just sat around and cried?

I have nothing but the deepest admiration for the marines that helped in this.

A single positive element does not make a story positive. I'll choose to ignore your assinine question.

And one negative element does not make a story negative; no one else seems to have trouble understanding what makes the story positive. If you choose to only focus on death that is your choice, others may choose to focus on life.

That actually made me tear up a little bit. There are some amazing people out there, thankfully some of them are in the Marines.

You can be an ass and bully others on many other posts and threads, and I wont say anything about it. But doing this in a thread about a boy that has died from cancer makes you look like a complete feth hole. How about you go puff your chest somewhere else ya?

OT yea that was a pretty moving story. I also really liked the Marine that stood guard for 8 hours. Thats some good people right there.

I can't get the image out if my mind of that Marine standing guard at the door for Cody's final hours, honoring him.
There are truly some amazing people in this world that act as a good template to try to measure up to.

He has the right to the opinion that 'standing up 8 hours' in front of a room doesn't actually accomplish anything positive for the kid. Maybe the dad could'bve mentionned the names of the caretakers, or the name of some doctor currently working on finding a cure for his son's disease?

Disagreeing with the general 'oh this is so touching' feeling isn't trollish, or bullying in any way, since this isn't a memorial page for the kid.

You have to serve in the US Marines to understand the signifance on what the NCO did and what it means. To me the boy died a marine. To the marine NCO he stood vigil over the boy as he would a marine before burial

So, again, why should this impress us? It should be considered tear-jerking that some dude stood up for hours in front of some kid's room because to them, standing in front of people's rooms means a lot, and they won't do it for just anyone. It's all nice, but to me, it doesn't beat the doctor pulling a few all-nighters to try and find a cure. It's still just stading in front of a door. It's a nice gesture...

No, but this might have more to do with that pesky firewall than with anything else...

Care to argue your point by actually stating them? Otherwise you might have to wait for a more appropriate answer...

Its a canadian highway "401" that was rename "Highway of Hero's". Its the route the canadian war dead from Afghanistan goes down before they are buried. Massive amount of support/solidarity for the fallen soldier from the civilian population. Not going to get into a debate with you and try to change your mind. You just never served in a military branch.....and the Canadians took the hockey rink with them from Kandahar Afghanistan

I'm not trying to start a debate on the value of jingoistic demonstrations. Someone tried to imply that it is trolling to state indiference toward the particular spin given on this particular story ; I wanted to point out that it really isn't the case. Everyone with a proper moral mindset will show compassion toward the sick kid in the story. Not caring about the military dude doesn't make you a dick... except to military personnel who somehow beleives that their choice entitles them to a higher form of respect than the rest of the population.

It's not about the military wanting recognition or some Marine running around going "look what I did". The military is not really the subject of the story at all.

It's about the child.

A child who wanted to be a Marine.
A child who was made an honorary Marine because that was his wish and it was important to him.
A child who got the feeling that he was important as a Marine, who received the final honor as a marine.

If you don't think that military should receive some special spot in our society, then that is alright since that is not the point of the story at all.

A child wanted to become a marine, so the marines made him one and he got to be a marine until he passed. It was something that was important to the child and he got it. Not because the marines wanted it, but because the child wanted it.
