The 5th edition Imperial timeline talks about Necrons waking up (the good old C'tan controlled ones at the time) and the golden throne having a blackout (as well other disasters). Things look pretty grimdark overall for the Imperium in that rulebook. What will do you think 6th will add to the official timeline/story? Even more grimdark? New Age of Strife? Does the Emperor return? Predictions?

Nothing, the timeline has been the same for a long time, I think since second edition everything has been effectively the same. Regardless, I think the individual codexes could have fluff changes like the Newcrons, but the timeline will stay still at 999999M41

Yeah, the studio have said on multiple occasions that they don't want to advance the storyline any further. The 'current' time in the background is what sets the scene for the game as a whole.
They're more interested in fleshing out the 'history'... the 10000 years or so between the 'current' time and the Horus Heresy.

This is not precisely true. The 13th Black Crusade and the awakening of the Necrons advanced the storyline slightly from where it started.
Some of the Black LIbrary books have also been set after the current time.

I thought that it wasn't so much an advance as it was "Oh this actually happened over the past year in the setting and this has been happening over the past century, we just never mentioned it." Because the setting has pretty much always been at 999999M41. Either way, the Newcrons make it seem like the setting will make a shift to being slightly brighter. While not nice the Newcrons have some degree of independence and can be negotiated with.

The Emperor will never return. Not because its impossible fluff wise, but because if he returns then the story kinda dies because he would lead a crusade and conquer the galaxy again(at least this what I've been lead to believe). At the end of the day GW is a business and never wants the story to end.

As much as I'd be intrigued by the story continueing, I have to agree with the assessment that it is unlikely to ever happen. The setting is not intended to tell stories but to lay the background foundation for big battles between armies of cool miniatures. There's potential for so much more, but that simply isn't GW's business. The storytelling bit as a secondary method of income is covered by Black Library, but its stories can easily remain limited to taking place before the end of the current timeline. Given the lack of official canonicity and the artistic license left for the authors, it may be possible that one day we see novels presenting individual interpretations of the 'verse past M41 (in fact, I heard one of the Cain books already goes there?), but just like with any other outsourced product the studio itself is probably unlikely to feel confined by such visions, instead remaining to go by its laissez-faire policy.
"40k is an ever-evolving setting designed first and foremost to house a really cool game, and as such things don't always mesh or translate, or they (actually very occasionally) get changed outright."

There will be little story continuation. Likely it will be "the Golden Throne continues to fail". We'll continue to stretch the timeline to 99999999999999999.M41 and what have you.

The Uriel Ventris storyline is already into M42. I believe the last three books were set in M42. Automatically Appended Next Post: They don't have to stretch the timeline further, they can either look at other battles being fought or go back and focus on previous campaigns not covered. They could even introduce another faction, new xenos, or flesh out non-marine chaos armies.

That brings up a topic that I think they should address. Release rules and maybe a model for key characters in the novels you are making.
Ventris for the Ultramarines
Honsou for the Iron Warriors
Sarpedon for the Soul Drinkers (While you're at it, publish rules on fielding the actual army list of Soul Drinkers lol)
I am sure there are more but that would definetly be a way to keep up with the story progression inside the game itself

They did this for some, such as Gaunt's Ghosts or Ephrael Stern. Ultimately, though, Gav Thorpe once hinted that the studio is very selective about what they wish to adapt for their own stuff, likely not in the least because licensed products may at times deviate a lot from GW's own vision. Additionally, it's been quite some time since they last did this, so it may also be a project that has been dropped entirely, for whatever reason.
Maybe Forgeworld should pick up on this idea. They already produce the Horus Heresy stuff, don't they? I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate a selection of miniatures that (hopefully) also have something from their favorite books. Even without official GW rules they could still be used as counts-as.

Amberley's Cain Archive is published in at least the first centruy of M42 - maybe the second - a number of reference books she uses are also from this period.
Not a huge amount seems to have changed - maybe a few things got better but she is still an Inquisitor and writing for her peers.....
I doubt that GW will advance the plot for reasons stated - but then I was pleaently suprised by the new Dark Eldar (much less so by the New encorns and not at all by the Grey Knights)
as Lynata mentioned they have done a series of models - including the Tanith First and Only, Stern and Cain - I would love them / FW to do more but then I also want:
Mechanicus Codex, proper rules for different IG regiments, more Tac Aeronautica models for the new flyers range etc etc, oh and Horus Heresy rulebook and codexes

Blah, moving backwards means less Tyranids since they came in at the tail end of the current timeline, so I'm not at all pleased.

I think you're a bit confused as to how the GW marketing machine works, heh.
If Tyranids sell models, or have the potential to sell models, they'll get new stuff. If isn't like the Tyranids ever factored in the fluff too much. Tyranids show up, rawr, eat stuff, done. If the timeline does indeed focus more on "historical 30something K" and there needs to be new release of Tyranids figs, then somebody will magically encounter an advance element of Hive Fleet Behemoth.

Good Lord, no. The sooner the Soul Drinker books slip into the murky depths of history and are forgotten about, the better.
Kain wrote:Blah, moving backwards means less Tyranids since they came in at the tail end of the current timeline, so I'm not at all pleased.
That's not how it works.
The fluff where it currently stands establishes the setting of the game, which includes plenty of Tyranids.
Fleshing out the backstory just means filling in some of the history that we haven't heard yet. It has no effect on those elements of the game that are already there.

So a new "spoiler" video for 6th was on the GW website today. Something about a psyker. Goodness knows what that was spoiling. Some powerful psyker with a third eye in his forehead (navigator?). Whats that all about? It would be nice if GW spoiler videos could be a little more spoiled.
