So I know you're all playing D3 and there are so many stolen 40k memes (or hidden references/tributes if you want to be optimistic instead).
It's true these sayings could be general but when you stumble on over 40 warhammer references in an hour that you rarely hear anywhere else, eyebrows be raised.

I'll start with some I've noticed but I know there's at least 5 more that I've seen but can't remember right now:

Templar: What a monstrous creature!

Achievement(?): Seizing the initiative

Cultist: Bring him to me, that I may rend the flesh from his bones [Originally from the Demon Prince in DoWC IIRC]

This comes up anytime anyone talks about references. Those three things are not original to 40k. Monstrous Creature and seizing the initiative are terms adopted from other sources by 40k. And I'm sure the other has previous references as well.

And here we have a perfect case of "this reference has to mean MEEEEEEEEEEEE" syndrome.

One is a description and the other is a commonly used phrase. It would be like saying that once one thing has used the words, 'red truck' to describe something, than any time you see a vehicle described as a 'red truck' thereafter it was 'adopted' from the previous source. Seizing initiative is too common of a term to source, it'd be like trying to make an original attribution to 'hold the line.'

So.. why post in a d3 thread if you don't play d3?

Two things:
1) It isn't a D3 thread. It is a 40k thread because it is posted in 40k General Discussion and not Video Games.
2) Did anyone say they didn't play D3?

Those quotes are not from 40k, 40k took them from other things.

Because I can. Because I have my own standards. Because I won't empower the need for online always singleplayer games. Because I don't "need" diablo 3, I'm playing and enjoying diablo 2 (among other things, like 40k) just fine. Because I will not have my stance on something change because it's the newest and shinest, or let the hype get to me. Because I am an individual.

Also, doing stuff in order to remove meat from bones is a pretty common phrase spewn out by villains. Unless you want to argue that GW came up with that too?

Lets be fair - blizzard doesn't innovate, they copy and improve. So overlapping GW stuff isn't a surprise!

What Blizzard does has nothing to do with why people don't agree with OP. (Btw. GW does that too.)
It's just that examples given are widely used and do not originate from wh40k.
You don't have to play D3 to know that.

Nah, D3 has that auction house. A warhammer might cost you 40k.

OT:

When you seize the initiative, that means you take advantage of the situation and set your plans and activities into motion. You're "on the ball", as the saying goes.

You know what other game has initiative?

Every other RPG on the planet. All of them have some mechanic or another that determines when you get to move in the combat round. Monopoly has the guy sitting to the left of the banker going first. Other board games have you flip a coin or roll a dice, or in some other way determine who moves first.

A monstrous creature is a creature that is both large and scary in appearance and/or temperament. This is not unique to 40k. Many creatures in games featuring creatures depict them as monsters. You know what game also has monstrous creatures, even going so far as to have compendiums thereof? Dungeons & Dragons, all the way back to 1st Edition in the 1970s.

Rending flesh from bones? Cheesy dialog from villains has been cheesy dialog from villains as far back as theatrical plays of ancient Greece. Probably even older, but I don't recall any Sumerian theatricals at the moment.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Some people truly believe this stuff. It's related to the notion that X joke came from Y TV show, instead of Z show that Y show copied it from.

It could be from the notion that Blizzard worked closely with GW developing what became warcraft and starcraft before GW pulled out at the last minute. There is a long history of WHFB and WH40K players and fans at Blizzard. Even if those ARE references to the GW universe they certainly aren't unique to it as GW "borrowed" heavily from other sources to create their universe. In any event it's not like Blizzared hasn't hidden easter eggs in EVERY game they have ever made, why should it surprise you that they included some references to their longstanding interests.
