I recognise it from the devastator set, it's the thing that you usually give to the squad sergeant. I think it's a scanner of some sort, but I'm not 100% certain, it doesn't have any rules for it though.

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

It's an Auspex, it also no longer has rules since GW did away with the Armoury section in each Codex

Yeah, auspex.... IIRC its used to grant a squad a "free" shot at infiltrators before the game started. No more...

Fluffwise the Auspex (Scanners and Multiscanners) would be used by members of an imperial force to detect any number of battlefield threats from sunken mines, invisible gas, enemy infiltrators to standard information (building layout and a motion sensor I guess).

Gamewise... it makes a cool accessory to hold.

You get a bajillion of them with Marine kits. No longer has any function other than aesthetics; although I am surprised people don't recognise them, they're almost as indentifiable as Bolters.

Used to let the squad take a free shot at nearby deep strikers if I remember correctly. Like everyone else has said though, it is purely decorational now.

Originally it was an auspex, yes, back when stormtroopers had more access to space marine gear. However, I would like to note that between being an auspex and its current nothing, it spent a codex as a piece of wargear called a "surveyor", which was like an auspex, but slightly worse.

4th ed had a part of the strategy that had to do with pre-first-turn infiltration. While infiltration is still a rule in 5th ed, you scarcely see it used, and not in the same way as in the past. Back then, every army had at least one infiltrating unit, in the very least to act as a counter-infiltration unit against enemy infiltrators and all-infiltrator armies (like alpha legion). The surveyor on a stormtrooper squad with infiltration (back when they had to pick which way they were going to deploy in the list building phase) was guard's answer to this.

Of course, now the tactic and the wargear are both long gone. The model's still the same, though.

The Black Templars still have this in their armory and can give an Auspex to their Marshal's, Chaplains, and Techmarines.

It works like Ailaros says. If an infiltrator sets up and/or moves within 4d6" (I think) of a model with this, then he and his attached squad can shoot at it before the game starts.

As everyone has said, Auspex.
I see a lot of people using it to represent a Signum in devastator squads. It allows you to skip your own shooting, and give another model in your unit bs 5 for that shooting phase. I always reasoned that this was how chronus gave his tank bs 5, since he is modelled with one.

I thought the signum was the big thing on the sergeants backpack??

Yeah, I always imagined them as a 2 part piece of gear. The thing on the backpack being like the radar scanner, and the thing in the hand being the radar screen displaying the information.

actually, thats the PSP41k.S - special bro-ki-mon edition. it features cloud saving features, 200gig storage and only 35 diffirent ads about the emprah. (wich display every 2 seconds). aside from that, it can play propaganda movies sponsered by homeland security and bush.co, and it can download and play "defend the emprah" games (each sold seperatly for 99999.99 each) its 1 hour battery life can be recharged with a psyker soul, or just plug it into the back of a nearby heretic. (or fleeing ally)

One more thing, since it makes the model stand out alittle, you could still use it to represent someone who is carrying non-shooting weapon special equipment, such as melta-bombs.
