Subject: Varnish made my miniatures look "frost"

Long-Range Ultramarine Land Speeder Pilot

Hello there everyone,
It's the third time I used a varnish on my finished miniatures and this time i got a satin citadel varnish to use on my finished high elves.
But when I'm done and the varnish went dry i saw all my miniatures looking like their colors are "frost". They have this frost like effect on them on some parts of the miniatures etc. The miniatures look is very very disappointing tho I spend a lot of time painting them
Can I do something to remove the varnish, or make the miniatures look alright once again?
Thank you in advance

Seems to be a common issue with the Citadel varnish, or at least it seems to happen a lot when that's involved. Mostly it would have something to do with the humidity when you sprayed them if I remember correctly. I think the solution was gloss varnish then some other mat varnish, but I'd suggest waiting for someone who has a better clue about solving it as I'm not too sure about that one.

QFT!
Cause of the frosting is the humidity in the air and the best solution is spraying on a thick coat of gloss, letting it dry and the spray it again with matte varnish. This should get rid off the frosting effect, or at least tone it down.

I've resorted to brush-on varnish on all of my models since it's really super humid in the Philippines. Don't really want to risk it.

Had this problem once before I had internet access, what a pain.
I wonder if it's possible to achieve the effect on purpose, like to make an ice blade for example, or frosty terrain?

Sure you can use the effect deliberately. My winter Dark Elves makes use of it. Just wait until the humidity is high and the spray matt varnish (brand really doesn't matter) takes care of it.
When you don't want it, just spray with gloss varnish to remove the frost effect, then wait for a dryer day to spray the matte varnish.

Its not just GW varnish. I've always had bad experiences with any type of spray on, so brush on it is for me now.

The brand of matte varnish has nothing to do with frosting. It's all about the ambient humidity.
Don't use spray matte varnish in high humidity and all will be fine.
Here's a question. Testor's matte spray is a lacquer, not a varnish. Does it frost in high humidity as well? I've not expiremented with it myself.

if the frosting is really heavy spray a lot of gloss varnish, wait until half dry and spray again.
