Been building up for a while but I'm never buying White Dwarf again. A new edition of 40k and the supporting WD is absolute gak . Last 4 [at least] have been a complete waste of money too, but I was thinking it might be because they were so busy getting ready for 6th.

The main battle report lacks detail [cramming two turns onto one page ] and doesn't really provide me with an insight into the impact of the new rules. 5 pages are taken up with full page instructions on how to paint Tau [I don't paint them and don't use GW paints - I know how to base, shade and highlight thanks]. 26 pages taken up showing off studio armies - yeah they do look great but your job is to paint them while the rest of us cram in painting around proper jobs, girlfriends etc. 15 pages at the back about new stores I'll never go to, events I'll never play in and gaming clubs I'll never join [and it's easier to google them anyway],

The last few WDs in particular have been awful - the best part [imo], battle reports, have been missing or in the same rushed format. Standard Bearer is more like the ramblings of a senile old man who doesn't have a child to offer a Werther's Original to so instead bangs on about absolute gash. Two page spreads trying to get me to buy Finecast [never gonna happen]. They take me 30 mins max to read cover to cover.

I bought some old WDs [Fat Bloke era] from Ebay to make sure it wasn't just nostalgia - and it wasn't. They were packed with interesting stuff - non-core rulesets, real people's armies that are interesting to look at, short stories, detailed battle reports [sometimes two in one issue] useful insights into gaming [rather than just encouraging people to buy the latest model], interesting conversion advice [Dok Mek or something]. There were even tutorials on how to make terrain, and sometimes they gave away free models! They each took me around 2 hours to read cover to cover and I was a very happy chappy while doing so.

I used to look forward all month to getting the new WD and the inner collector in me died a little but I'm not wasting my money any more [not on WD anyway].

Stop buying it and maybe it'll get better? It's commonly accepted that older WDs were much better. I remember when they had the backstory of a primarch in each issue for a while, it was gripping.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

It probably won't, don't let that stop you from not getting WD.

I absolutely loved the WD from 300 and before. They used to have:

-Cardstock Datafax cards for 40K vehicles
-Punch-out cardstock scenery
-Tale of 4 gamers
-Great stories
-Chapter Approved Rules/additional rules for specialist games
-Scenery Building Articles
-The Entire basic game of the Beta version of Battlefleet Gothic given complete with free rules and card ship/torpedo/blast tokens

Now it's just a giant sales brochure for the latest month's and upcoming releases.

7 years ago, almost everyone I knew in the GW scene read WD and about half of the people bought it (we shared). Now, I know 1 person who buys it on a regular basis and 1 who has a subscription.

I still wish I still had the BFG one with the card ships.

They were loads better, and I'm not even talking about some of the offers (Aenur, Sword of Twilight, metal miniature by Brian Nelson; Codex: Assassins, plastic minis here and there), the Andy Chambers/Chapter Approved, I don't know... Alessio Calvatore as a special guest (Italian tournament winner), also people's armies like it was said, other systems - Gorkamorka, Necromunda, Space Hulk - and very, very funny articles, often 'bout 3-4 pages, about varying stuff from a Fantasy player (his halfling archers were known as Podgy Purveyors of Pathetic Projectiles) about random stuff like Skaven Magic nastiness (with a chart going from light mental trauma to psychologically devastating) to the chivalry and principles of hidden deployment whereas people would deploy their armies behind a "curtain" (peeking over the barrier is ill advised, as getting punched in the eye generally hurts a lot).

I can't really pinpoint what's missing, but I had a subscription for three years, since mid-third edition or something, and ended up dropping it as I felt what I was getting from the magazine was less and less.

Sad really, used to really care for the WD Team, like Adrian Wood, Tuomas Pirinen, Jake Thornton, Iain Compton, amongst others, the guys before (but not excluding) Fat Bloke's team.

I agree. The latest white dwarf is the first one I have bought since the battle for Armageddon many moons ago and it was lacking in comparison. The Armageddon battle report was so in-depth it felt like I was reading a short story and the issue included Index Astartes rules for the White Scars and all sorts of good stuff. The latest issue was disappointing to say the least as I had bought it to find out about the new rules and how they would change the game but found they were only briefly mentioned.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I stopped buying WD for all the reasons you described a really long time ago. I also miss the better days when it was actually a hobby magazine rather than an expensive brochure; back when battle reports were actually interesting and they told you how to build cool terrain on your own. I should note that at one point (around 2001 maybe) WD went to crap for a year or so then got better for a few years. Who knows, maybe they'll get their act together.

I still have mine from issue 200 - 240 or so. Plus some really old ones a friend of mine gave me a decade or so ago. I still parse through them now and again. Nice stuff.

I haven't bought one in years, mostly because, and well, I haven't purchased ANY magazine in years so I don't know if it is market value, but $9 USD is a tad steep. My Amazon Prime subscription doesn't run me close to $100/year, so no WD.

To be honest, I have loved White Dwarf since the first issue I ever bought which had this guy glued to the front along with a copy of 2nd edition 40k

I even love the latest issue, I took what I needed from it, admire the paint jobs and got the inspiration I needed for projects.

I would, but Dakka always makes me feel so terrible about WH40k. It basically ruined the game for me, to the point where instead of playing a game every week, now I maybe play maybe once every month or two.

I keep coming back though, expecting it to be different. But it's not. It's never different.

Edit: On-topic, though, I can't bring myself to read the articles in WD anymore. I find myself just looking at the pictures and reading datasheets - if any - because when I read the text, I feel like I'm reading an advertisement.

This issue is my favorite in a long time! and manchu is right this is flame bait...you can shade and highlight..good for you..many can't.
This particular white dwarf featured a massive show case on the studio teams various small Forces including converted models which provided excellent inspiration, (your coment on "its not fair i have a gf and a job and there better because that is there job is silly) the battle report of the scouring of KASR XV a great showcase on the use of allies in 6th edition armies which at the time many would not have used yet, also a follow up on the new fliers with a battle report based on the fluff made for the assault on black reach forces made up by steve and duncan ( admittedly a sales ploy to sell the last few boxs before Dark vengeance was released ha!).
.for me a good issue and if you look closely into the paint "Tau" section, you will see that the colours and techniques can be applied to anything not just tau and with any companies paint. so there wasnt anything for you in that particular issue so you flame it online..personally i look forward to my monthly white dwarf and think there doing a fantastic job.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
however i dont completely disagree with you, i thought i was just getting older and wiser and thats why everything felt like a sales pitch. but if you have read old issues and they were not like this maybe the world has changed and not me.
