Having a kid living with you, even if he isn't yours, can bring back the best memories of your childhood.
So it is that I find myself living with my nephew - and that means being there for meals, walks, talks, and the whole "going to bed" business.
He never really cared for music... except for a particular artist, José Afonso. And let me tell you, this man has the single greatest lullaby in the world.*
So, rather inspired by this song, I thought everyone could share a song from their childhood - I know there are probably dozens of songs you like, but pick the one you like the most, talk about the artist, the song, whatever you want. I guess I'll start, then.
Lyrics / very rough and bad translation
Spoiler:
Dorme meu menino a estrela d'alva / The morning star is sleeping, my boy (or could also be sleep, my little boy)
Já a procurei e não a vi / I looked for her and didn't find her
Se ela não vier de madrugada / If she doesn't come in the dawn,
Outra que eu souber será pra ti / another that I know will be for you
ô ô ô ô ô ô ô ô ô ô ô ô (bis)
Outra que eu souber na noite escura / Another that I know of, in the Dark night
Sobre o teu sorriso de encantar / under your enchanting smile
Ouvirás cantando nas alturas / You will hear singing very loud
Trovas e cantigas de embalar / Ballads and lullabies
Trovas e cantigas muito belas / Very beautiful ballads and lullabies,
Afina a garganta meu cantor / Ready your throat, my singer,
Quando a luz se apaga nas janelas / When the light goes out on the windows,
Perde a estrela d'alva o seu fulgor / The morning star loses it's breath
Perde a estrela d'alva pequenina / The little morning star loses
Se outra não vier para a render / If another does not come to replace it
Dorme quinda à noite é uma menina / Sleep, that the night is still a child
Deixa-a vir também adormecer / Let her go to sleep
This beautiful song was written by this great person, a fighter, a bard, and a hero.
As a child, we had no radio, record player or television.
I didn't start listening to music before I was about 12-13.
Of course, being severely deaf (surgically rectified) until the age of 8 probably also had an effect on this. You can't miss what you don't know.
That was AC-DC and "the Angels". Even "youth oriented" radio of the time didn't appeal to me.
The wiggles didn't happen until I was well into being a "grown up" and are themselves the remnants of an 80s "pop" act called "the cockroaches".
I'm sure youtube will have their video for "hey, let's go" or "She's the one" somewhere.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
And I actually don't think I've ever heard "the wiggles", I'll get round to it when I digest Portugal's defeat.
Your doomed to find out about them now......but I wouldn't mind removing their heart from the bodies with a cinderblock...espacially after listening to them on a road trip for 4hrs way back in the day
