I took a break from painting last week to build a new terrain set. You got a sneak peak of it if you read this report.
I have a bunch of the tie-dyed fleece cloths from JoAnn's Fabrics and I've been wanting to get complete terrain sets for each one. It's been a project I've put off for months and this new foam cutter the NOVA guys are using has me inspired.
Here's what I came up with. It's not magazine quality, but my normal requirements of saving time and money applied. This table was done in about 8 days worth of free time (2-4hrs per day).
The crystals and different rock levels are tall enough to give cover to all MC's and non-flyer vehicles. It's not quite 25% yet, but definitely playable. I'm waiting to see what 6th ed brings to finish up the set. Maybe a creepy crystal forest ooooooooh! I don't care what people say, I like the cheesy random stuff.
A more complete article can be found here. Hope you like it.

I like them! They aren't your usual terrain but they look nice. I must say my favorite part is your Painted figures, they are superb.

Looks great. Simple but very mini friendly. All those slopes on the pre-molded terrain are a nightmare.
Awesome stuff man!

Yeah although the foam was about half a board so maybe $7 and the cloth was $15 with a printable coupon. The paints, airbrush, and basing materials were all stuff i use on my various armies so this was maybe a $25 table. I was going to do crazier colors for the crystals but I chickened out at the last minute and I'd feel bad painting over real quartz lol.
Thanks for the comments and pointing out the functionality. It was actually pretty high on my priority list. I get about 4 games in a month, 3 of which are at our monthly tournament which I also supply terrain for. Since my tables end up getting more tournament use than casual stuff, I'm building them more for functionality. That's why all the pieces are cut straight instead of beveled, I wanted to avoid tipping and fallen models.
Plus, I wanted to try out a scheme that I could expand on to look like a topographical map with multiple "tiers" of elevations.
The full GK army is here for those who liked it:

I wouldn't paint the crystals
you can get "lots", that is what a bunch of quartz crystals is called, for pretty damn cheap. IMO they would look better not painted, more real I guess
something like that is probably 7 US Dollars and probably double the height of a space marine
of course the table would be more expensive, but it would look boss

I love it! That is something I've always wanted to do and I'd be proud to play on such an inspirational table.
