So with the advent of flyers I'm now scrambling to come up with solutions for my armies. My guard, the only thing I know of other then buildings that can stop the flyer is the Hydra. The FW Hydra is nice, GW doesn't have a plastic version, but as nice as the FW one is, it's price is pretty high. Anyone have a cheaper alternative to buy or way to convert? My poor guardsmen will thank you for it!

I saw one in my local GW by one of the regulars and a staff member. It was really good and they actually put it in the cabinet. Basically, they took the base of the Aegis Gun and put a Brass wire through. On each side they stuck one of the Aegis Guns, so they were on either side, rather than on top. Then they elongated the barrels with plastic rods. So simple. If I am done this week I'll take a pic.

Aegis defense line quad gun with barrel extensions to represent longer range and chimera chassis with plasticard is your best bet., check the gallery for ideas including mine.

Looks very nice, I still think that if a model is on offer you should use the one that's avaliable. But then again that does look pretty darn awesome

If the conversion fits, then use it. I love seeing converted Hydras. Having never owned the actual FW model for several reasons (PRICE, and the barrels are larger than a LR battlecannon barrel in length and diameter!), I can appreciate the creative skills that can go into making a good converted model.

So, I say, keep on modeling and keep churning out awesome conversions like the one above. Variety is the spice of life and GW seems to be counterproductive to this philosophy.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude.

Yes. There are many fancier/prettier versions around, including commercially available conversions as mentioned by other posters, but Aegis guns on a Chimera chassis is perfectly acceptable. To any pedants who whine about the 'standard' autocannon not matching the Hydra special versions, just say it's been equipped with special anti-flyer ammo.

I also go with it's a "drop" version or field conversion.

The coolest psrt is I can remove the gun and mount them on a seperate base if I want to use the Quad autocannons on my Aegis line!

Neato... thanks to Kenshin, I don't even need to post my Hydra conversions... A citation might have been nice though

Yeah, his site fell down a few days ago. It should be up again soon, though - he has to rebuild it.

I really like the look of those, i was going to get a couple of FW ones but those conversions look just as good and do not appear to be that complex to do.

I generally agree upto a point, if the models available are expensive, like a lot of FW stuff, then i cannot blame someone making a conversion instead.

Puppetswar also makes a decent quad-autogun turret.

For what it's worth I recently ordered a Hydra. While the turret and hull adapters are great, the actual guns are no so much. There's a noticeable lack of fine detail on both weapon pods. It looks like the mold has just been used too many times.

So if you think you want a real Hydra after all, move now. With the increased demand it's possible that the mold will finally give out, and if the original isn't in good shape in storage...

Though I've got to say why there isn't a hydra plastic model or metal/finecast upgrade at this point is beyond me...

You could just scratch build a turret which mimics the front of the Chimera and then slap some HWS auto-cannons on to it.
Or if you have the time and patience why not use the Sentinel instead. Here are my counts as Hydras as every one is posting examples of Hydras.
Spoiler:

They are cheaper than buying a Chimera and then a quad gun set as every thing on them are from my bits box.
Never had a complaint about them when ever I've used them (which is in every single list I use) and one guy even asked if they were a Forgeworld model which I count as a very high compliment

Those sentinels are really nice, but they have lascannon... I think Hydras need a proper quad-barrel RFAC to get the right idea across

Yeah, I've had afew question that (I had used all my auto-cannon bits for some thing else so i used the las-cannons) but then I say they are Clan ER pulse lasers. Which if you think about it would make abit more sense as they are small and wouldn't be able to hold the munitions for both the heavy bolter and stubber
Every one knows I'm slowly building up a Mechwarrior styled IG army.
Also any other guns you attach to it gets the benefits of the Hydras rules so even more lead can be slung into the air (or in my case LAZORS)
