This might seem like a bit of an odd question and a long shot, but does anyone know of a replacement for brown ink? It's what GW had before the "wash" paints they use now. It was like a glossy brown stain, it was slightly trickier to use than the current washes but gave a glossy finish and was good at tinting a region a certain colour. I use it on my Tyranids for the fleshy bits and deep crevices like the images below (the Zoanthrope's brain, the Carnifex's tongue, the ribs of the Ravener, etc) , but I'm starting to run out and need a replacement :(

Any ideas?

Have you checked eBay?

Also I think theres a company that do "equivalents" of GWs older colours, might be vajello (sp?)

There are several brands that still produce inks. Vallejo is one of them on the wargames specific, but Daler rowney and Windson & newton also have inks of excellent quality.

pick your color, the GW ones were the same thing.

That's awesome, thanks for the links. I'll have to find an Australian source for them. Do you think it'd be the "Burnt Umbar" or one of the other ones?

There's some nice colours in there, gives me some ideas for some of my other armies.

In some ways inks aren't as useful for wargaming as the washes, but for certain tasks they produce a very nice effect that you just can't reproduce with washes or layering.

Is this brown ink one of the ones from years and years ago? when they had the hexi-flip-top pots?
If thatst he case the I believe they were manufactured by 'Coat D'Arms' and can still be purchased, just not with citadel written on the bottle. The colours remain the same perhaps with different names (can imagine that 'boltgun metal' is a name for black silver owned by GW)
Number 136 Ink wash Brown on this store here, is that what you need?

You can probably tell by checking out the other colour names in the line... when you got this brown ink, was there also chestnut ink? And the old metallic purple colour citadel used to have Amethest Purple, that was these Coat D'arms guys who made them, and they still do if anyone wants those old nostalgia shades from GW

Yeah it was an old hex pop top, though not the really old ones. If I go through the GW paint history (may have forgotten some)...

current paints (circular flip top)
old paints (circular flip top)
hex flip top <---This had the Brown Ink.
hex screw top <---terrible pots that were hard to open and dried out quickly.
hex flip top <--- Awesome paints that rarely dried out and included lots of interesting colours like blue metallics.

Those really old paints were great, I still use some of them which I bought well over 10 years ago now. All the GW paints since then have terrible pots that dry out really easily.

I can't actually remember how far back the Brown Ink goes, whether they had it in the days of Chestnut Ink and Flesh Ink.

I'll have a look at some Coat d'Arms and see if I can get them easily enough in Australia.

Thanks!

No problem. I'm quite sure I know the ink you have, I used to like flesh and chestnust shades. And I think the manufacturer GW used at the time was Coat D'arms and they still do the same paints.

Since then GW keeps swapping manufctuers, the new stuff is apparantly made in the UK, I don't know who actually makes it right now. But am inclined to suggest windsor and newton (or who'mever they contract to) as they are pretty much the biggest artists acrylic paint brand in the UK

Yeah I'll check them out and see how I go. I do have some flesh and chestnut ink that still works from those really old hex flip top pots (5 generations ago) and also some random other inks (orange and green I think, those pots were great, it's amazing they haven't dried out) but my brown ink is from the more recent pots (only 3 generations ago), it might date back earlier than that though. I actually used the old flesh ink on my old Tyranids

Cool thanks, really good thread. I might have to pick up a few inks and try them out.
