Greetings All.

There is a kickstarter project that I ran across yesterday that simply screamed For the Emperor.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/970265378/hydra-dice-necron

The dice look like

I am not in any way affiliated with the Kickstarter project nor do I know this company..but I do know I have to get a set for my 40k army.

Thought I would post here to see if anyone else might be interested in them. (Its not often that I get excited about dice but I like these.)

The seem impossible to read and hard to sit flat on the table. The D12 and D20 will never stop rolling,

Presumably having a raised pip rather than an embedded pip will affect the randomness of the roll?

Good questions ill post them to the gent behind the project to see what he says.

They look quite hard to read, and the skull design is rather rudimentary.

I'd rather just get customized Chessex dice.

A question and answer listed on the kickstarter page:

Q: Won't the skull faces interfere with rolling and proper level seating?

A: When I designed these, I did initially feel that the design was to protruding to allow easy rolling or level seating on a surface, so I actually had to (for lack of a better word) squash the shape to make it more level with a flat surface. The design you see it the result of experiments and compromises to get it to feel right. I honestly don't think it will be an issue in die rolls. I may try posting a nice close-up of the design graphics to show how level they are. In some ways they shape is almost an optical illusion that appears to stick out a lot, but is actually pretty level on a surface.

Eh, I'll stick to the Munitorum dice GW released, those got skulls and are easier to read.

These actually look nice impractical but nice.

I had expected someone to have posted comments regarding the forthcoming litigation from GW for using what is obviously GW IP (skullz and in particularly skullz on stuff).

Not my cup of tea. The skulls are too cartoony, and the numbers too hard to read. I'm also not convinced by the 'trust me, they roll ok', to be honest.

Wow, those are completely awful. Someone would voluntarily pay money to make their dice functionally and aesthetically worse?

And that needs a kickstarter?

I like the design. What I'm not crazy abou tis that he plans on casting them in resin.

I can already tell that these dice are not going to roll average. There are too many imprecisions in this guy's technique and he does not seem particularly interested in fixing them. I'd give this one a miss. If you want "gothic" dice, buy from GW; if you want precise dice, buy from GameScience.

I agree with the critique above:
1.) Hard to read with hidden small numbers
2.) Hard to roll with almost round form, will usually end between 2 numbers
3.) Imbalanced if made from resin (bubbles)
4.) Clown skull not appealing
5.) Stilized skull product named Necron? Guess GW lawyers will try to take it down in no time.

These are the worst dice in the world and the only consolation I see here is that if they're made of resin they will probably chip and shatter sooner or later, mercifully ending their hellish existence.

My thoughts exactly. Almost every aspect of this project, from legal to material to aesthetics to function is bad. I am going to go start some kickstarters right now because apparently a terrible idea gets you $8000 these days.

No interest myself, but this is the flipside of that miniswithenemies or that documentary on gamers that guy wanted $36k for. If people like it, they will pay.

There is no way that these dice are in any way practical. Not only would they roll forever, the resin casting would chip them in no time. With almost 300 backers though, I guess they appeal to some!

The other designs are better but still nothing that interests me, I have to pass on this one!

I'd think that since every side has the same raised detail, the skulls wouldn't affect the randomness.

Still an unattractive product, though.

These would be better if they had an engraved skull instead of embossed. Neither way makes them any easier to read.

And resin is a terrible idea for dice. Bubbles, chips, cracks.

I'd have to agree, if the skulls were engraved this thread would probably even be going on about how great they are. Assuming they didn't need to also squash the skull in that case and it allowed more room for the numbers. Such as the number is represented by a stud on the skull's forehead or number of cracks on the skull. Something easy to see, and if clever enough doesn't even need to be a number.

As they are they'd probably be better off as display dice.

indeed. They would be fine as counter dice.

I still think that skull design looks terribad.

A somewhat misleading post in all honestly. While the dice in question look particularly terrible in my opinion, if you watch the video on the Kickstarter page, you can see that the project is for a larger variety of dice... not just these "skull?" dice.

With that said, a lot of the other dice portrayed seem to look quite nice, even if these skull dice are far from such a title.

Edit: Some of the other dice

They would be a cool novelty item, but in terms of usefulness, I don't see these as dice I'd roll too often...
