Hallandale Beach Mayor Renee Crichton said it has always been the city's policy that a lifeguard must respond to an emergency inside or outside of their protected area.
I don't believe I've seen that point raised previously.

It's not really "karma" if people willing act in such a way.
Still, the guy deserves it.

I see he was smart enough NOT to accept his job back when they offered it.
I'm quite sure they would have held him to impossible standards and fired him 'for cause' with the paper trail to prove it within a month. That's what idiot bosses do when you do something that makes them look bad.

Good-the guy was a hero and I'm glad he made out alright. I hope a new group of people take over the management of the lifeguards there, seeing how they screwed up by firing him and went against the law.

Didn't the lifeguard not really save anybody anyway? By the time he got there the other guy was already rescued by bystanders. He just looked after him while waiting on an ambulance. Job was still wrong for firing him, but this is also a publicity stunt by the city IMO.

Yank law regarding firing people isn't like English law. You can fire anyone for anything except the reasons as stated here. Ofcourse it does differ state by state, but the federal law is akin to our EU Laws.

What does "yank" law have to do with anything? This took place in Florida, I think, not New York.

"Yank" is a shortened "Yankee," which while it can refer to northeastern US and more commonly New York, is often used by multiple other nations to refer to citizens of the US.

Now might be a good time as any, but isn't U.S. Law just Common Law + weird interpretations of the Constitution? Is Yankee law some sort of civil law? I'm confused... Oh and good for Lifeguard dude, he deserves it. Honestly I doubt one single human being would not have done the same thing, the 2 lifeguards I know and told the story said they know about some similar regulations, and would all disregard them...

Yank is slang for all America/Americans. I am well aware of its actual/historical usage, but if it offends you, try calling a Scottish person English

It's not realy. Yank is a commenly used term for people from the USA outside the States. It has a diffrent meaning outside the US. Caling a Scottish person English is more like calling somemone from the US Canadian. Scotland and England are diffrent nations. And it's not uncommen for paople from the US to call everyone from the UK English, be they English, Scotish, Welsh, or Irish. Its more like calling someone from Cornwall English.

"Yank" gets more and more specific, depending on how close to the source you get.
To foreigners, Yank means "someone from the U.S.A."
To Americans, Yank means "someone from the northeastern US"
To people in the NE US, Yank means "someone from New York"
To people from New York, Yank means "someone from New York City"
To New Yorkers, Yank means "someone from the Bronx"
To people from the Bronx, Yank means "a member of the New York Yankees"
To members of the New York Yankees, Yank means "a long-dead hall-of-famer from Yankee past"
To long-dead hall-of-famers from Yankee past, Yank means "us"

Yes, I'm aware of the ignorance of a variety of people. Just because it's widely used doesn't mean they're not ignorant and wrong.

When it is used "wrongly" by more people than those who used it "correctly", one would think the definition of right and wrong would be suitably adjusted. In the UK "yank" is a term to describe all people from the USA regardless of where they live within it. It is called "English" for a reason

Yes indeed we are. For example, the other day I heard too people talking. One asked, "How was your weekend in Dingle?" The person responded, "It was s.hite. The hotel was full of yanks."
