Fixed that for ya.
Or the even less popular BBS forums ah the good ol days, spending $300 for my 14.4k modem because it was the latest and greatest. Running my own BBS, the fun door games, donations

May the the blessings of His Grace the Emperor tumble down upon you like a golden fog. (Only a VERY select few will get this reference. And it's not from 40k. )
"Oh, you want to look up filthy porn while your parents are asleep? Let me play you the song of my people..."
What do you mean kids will never know this sound? Kids listen to dubstep all the time!
I remember that sound well from when I was just a wee lad .Back when the household had one computer and one E-mail Address. Back when there was only two TVs in the house, One in the master bedroom(which the kids were not allowed in) and one in the Living room. Back when the rules were "no TV after 7pm except on friday. Only one hour on the Internet and one hour on the Nintendo a day. Too much of that stuff will rot your brain." Back when they actually expected me to go into that nasty "outside" place and play with the neighbors.
How things have changed over the past 12-15 years. Now every room in the house has a Computer, at least one gaming console, and a TV. The rules have changed too. Now it's "Don't burn the place down and stop sending me texts damn it!" and the only time I heard the sounds of dial up is when I send a fax at work.
The even more wide-audience thing that came after Compuserve and Prodigy.

Was that a mid 90's music joke? I get the feeling it was but im not entirely certain...
Much to my shame I have also just realised that i have shown myself up to be one of the illiterate youths of this generation (who incidentally will know nothing of the wonderful sound that is dialup internet connecting and the subsequent joy that was getting broadband for the first time). In my earlier post i wrote "your" instead of "your're". It has been fixed and so now im going to go sit in a corner and not speak anymore... Good day to all.
Ahhh, I remember dial up. I remember when I was a kid and I was way too young to play DOOM, my dad got me DOOM and I played over the modem against some other kid from somewhere in the South... went into an AOL chatroom, asked if anyone wanted to play, then I had to manually configure the modem and make it dial his phone number. I think it was a 14.4K modem.
I also remember trying to play EverQuest on dial up, though it was a 56K modem this time. It actually kinda sorta worked!

And after all that work, somebody in the house would pick up the phone and cause your modem to kick you offline.
Ahhhh, I recall the absolute joy and abandon of getting broadband for the very first time.... It was awesome! No more would I hear that annoying 'buzz, whhhiiirrrrr, click-buzz-whiiiirrr' noise, and looking at dirty pictures on t'internet suddenly became a viable proposition!
Before, if I wanted to do that sorta thing I'd have boot up my Megadrive and play a game of Sonic whilst waiting for the poorly rezzed picture of boobies to appear....those were the days. Oh to be 14 again!

Never actually tried playing an online game before broadband came along. I suppose the closest I got was having Quake 2 LAN parties when the parents went away....ha, those were awesome! Although I recall there was always someone with an old 486 trying to get Q2 to work...
Good god I feel old
The amount of changes in tech I've seen in my lifetime is astonishing, imagine how your parents or grandparents feel! Hell, the first mobile phone I ever had was a Vodafone MN1, could barely make a call. Let alone send a text. Now look, suddenly I have touchscreen, mobile broadband to enable streaming videos, camera, video recording capabilities and MP3/4 capabilities. All from one device in my pocket.....All that in 20 years!

I miss webcrawler. And Excite.com(which oddly enough was NOT porn).

I do remember having to use dial up to play UO, and fighting my dad and bro for time since we were all playing it over the one computer. I don't think we used the phone for months.

Heh, dial up. Oddly enough the wife and I were just telling my son about it the other day, and just now I shared the dial up sound, and it kindda freaked him out

Compuserve and Prodigy were two earlier services which did things similar to AOL; had their own hosted discussion forums over which members could communicate with each other. My first online account was with Prodigy. This was years before the World Wide Web became a thing.
Back in those days people also used local Bulletin Board Systems. Think of a forum site like Dakka, only much smaller, with no graphics except for ascii, and the only way to access it was literally to dial into the owner's phone line. The owners of local boards often had a second (maybe a third and fourth) phone line dedicated to their computer with the BBS on it. So the number of people who could be on the forum at once was literally limited by the number of telephone lines. Many local home BBSs had only one line, so only one person at a time could be on the forum. You'd read through, make some posts, then log off/disconnect so someone else could get on. But this wasn't too awful, because the site might have only a couple of dozen members.

My first big search engine was Altavista. I remember when webcrawler and yahoo were new. And when google was an upstart little new search site, not a verb. My wife still has an excite email address for one of her accounts.

My bud at a local game store would set up DOOM LAN parties at the FLGS. Good times, those. I was always the cowardly sneak that would come out of hiding to shoot the last man in the back.
I remember when facebook first started. I thought, 'nah, won't bother with that - it'll never catch on!' How wrong I was.
When you think about it, we live in, and have lived through, exciting times. We've literally experienced a revolution in human communication.
That's kind of amazing, really. We'll all be able to tell our grandkids about what life was like before the internet. If humanity survives that long, of course.
