I don't know where you live but Denver is one of the cheapest airports to fly into in the US since it is a major hub. That said, if you can't come we do a great Live Ustream cast of the whole weekend. Search "Feast of Blades," at www.ustream.tv The link will also be available the weekend of on our main site.

Glad i saw this.

As a regular at one one of the FoB locations listed on the website its good to see this.

Because this is the first time I have heard of this.

There is zero promotion at the store. The main 40K club (which I am a member) has no idea this event is going on. The store has zero terrain, its all club terrain and no one at the store has approached any club member about the usage of the terrain. Aug 4th would be a regular club play event. No one at the store has informed us that here might be a conflict. Haven't heard anything from the Magic crowd about that day either and we usually share space on club nights.

Not to say a successful qualifying event wont be run, just saying its going to take a ton of work to pull off.

We just updated our team tourney info.

2 players, 4 codices, a good cause... Great times for all. Visit our website for the dirty details of 2 Seperate 1000 point armies.

Also, you can still buy assets/ re-rolls/ bonuses and the money goes to wounded warrior.

Glad I checked this; here in Albuquerque my club (Bolters Con Queso) we've been running FoB practice qualifiers for the last 3 months. I had a double FOC list til I read this. Good thing, we were gonna do this weekends practice tourney using double FOC and now we know not to! Good thread, please keep this updated

Very cool! Reminds me that I had some questions about the 5th ed missions! I'll also have a look at the 6th ed ones, as most of the qualifiers will be using those, and let you know if I have any questions on those as well.

5th ed mission packet:
Under Mission Information, on page 1, there are a couple of conflicts with how VPs are calculated for Capture vs the main rulebook. I wasn't sure if these are intentional, and only apply to Capture, or are possibly typos.

1. It says that units under half starting strength give up half points. In the rulebook it's at or under half. The example about the Space Marine squad seems to indicate that this is supposed to work like the rulebook.
2. It says that ICs which have suffered a single wound give up half points (which is how it worked in 4th ed), as opposed to needing to give up half or more of their wounds like in 5th.
3. It doesn't discuss multi-wound models in general. In the main rulebook, it states that any single model multi-wound unit gives up half points if reduced to half wounds or below; this neatly and simply covers ICs, MCs, and non-IC characters like Mephiston or Crowe. I think the way the rulebook does it is nice and clear.
4. You state that fleeing units at the end count as destroyed; you could remind players that this is a normal rulebook rule for all standard missions- at the end of the last turn all fleeing units are removed from the table and count as destroyed.(page 90).
5.One big situation which you don't cover for capturing is what happens to a unit straddling the line. Do they not count for anything (like in 3rd)? Do they randomize (like in 4th)? Or is it by majority of the unit, and only randomized if there is no majority? For single-model units, is it by the majority of the base/hull? So if more than half of my vehicle is in one quadrant, it's automatically in that quadrant?

Also under mission information I'm not sure why you went with objectives always having to be at ground level. Not being able to climb ruins is kind of an important downside of bikes and cavalry. Placing them higher in ruins can also be a good tactic for an infantry-heavy army vs a vehicle-heavy one, since non-walker vehicles can't climb levels, and it also is a defense against teleporters, since Deep Strike always lands at ground level. Totally up to you, but I don't know if this change from the rulebook is really necessary, and it does impact the balance of the game.

The missions themselves are very clear. Outstanding work, there!

Battle Point modifiers:
Critical Escort: Do you really mean at full strength (no models lost)? Or just over half so hasn't given up any VPs? As it stands any single-model Scoring Units are much better at this than regular units.
For Everywhere's a Bunker, does the unit have to fit completely into the area terrain to count, or a majority of the unit, or just any tiny little fraction? If the latter, can a single unit hold multiple pieces of area terrain?
Field Control: Same question about how much of the unit has to be in.
Fortified Objective: Again, how much of the unit has to be in the DZ? The whole thing? The majority?

Copied and sent on to our mission design lead. I'm not sure if he will directly answer each question as much as he will just update missions/mission information as needed to clearify the missions.

That said, keep the feedback coming! It is greatly appreciated!

Thanks! Yeah, if he's willing to update the packet that's absolutely ideal. Me having answers is of course less important than everyone having answers (assuming my question's not a stupid one).

Sorry I was slow on the edit, here are the 6th ed packet questions/feedback. In the 6th ed packet it looks like he already answered several of my original questions.

6th ed mission packet:
Interestingly, the new 6th ed book seems to totally lack rules for classic-style Victory Points, based on unit cost. Instead they've redefined Victory Points to mean points garnered by achieving mission objectives. You may want to rename the points you get for killing or damaging units to make the distinction clear. Maybe just something as simple as calling them "Classic-Style Victory Points", or "Old School Victory Points".

Question 1 is the same, because the packet rule (under half, as opposed to half or under) still conflicts with the example about the Space Marine squad (which shows AT half, as opposed to under).
Question 2 is not a problem in the 6th ed packet, because it doesn't conflict with anything in the 6th ed book.
Question 3 should be covered- do units of multi-wound models count half their starting strength based on model count, or wounds? If it's models, then units of multi-wound models can keep themselves over half longer by using Look Out Sir to pass wounds around. Either on their own (Paladins, Nobs), or by using an attached IC to spread wounds around by him standing in front and passing all the hits to different models by using his 2+ LOS before saves are taken. When they give up half VPs should really be based on Wounds taken, not on model count.
My Question 4 can be ignored in the 6th ed packet, since this ruling of yours is actually necessary now. In only half of the basic six rulebook missions is this true anymore- Purge the Alien, Big Guns Never Tire, and The Scouring. In Crusade, The Emperor's Will, and The Relic they don't count as dead at the end; although per page 123 units which are falling back at the end of the game don't count as Scoring or Denial units.
Question 5: I see you answered the one about units straddling quadrant lines. Cool!

The issue I raised about objectives above ground floor in ruins still holds. Page 121 of 6th ed gives significantly more detailed rules for placing objective markers than 5th did, and it still doesn't contain any rules saying they can't go in upper floors of a Ruin. With transport vehicles being weaker now, Cavalry and Bikes are both going to be more prevalent and popular, and their drawback of being unable to climb levels becomes a bigger deal. Page 121 already forbids them from being placed in a Fortification or Building, so that restriction isn't needed anymore.

New questions:
Flyers. One of your Flyer clarifications states that they never count as being in any kind of terrain. This is in conflict to the rulebook, as Flyers in Hover mode states that they work like Fast Skimmers, and Skimmers CAN be in terrain at the beginning or end of their movement. You might want to tweak the phrasing, maybe to, "Flyers only count as being in any kind of terrain IF they are in Hover mode, and do not count..."

Fortifications: You might just add a statement that they must be placed at least 3" from any other terrain piece. They don't tell us that in the rulebook because normally they're placed first. I like the way you guys are doing it, because it makes MUCH more sense in a tournament to have terrain pre-set, but the 3" restriction should stay.

The missions again are nice and clear. Good work, guys!

I see you answered all of my questions about the bonus points. Nice one.

Just as a quick note. Our objectives are NOT mysterious. They are plain old objectives that just sit there and look pretty, yelling "take me home,"

There has been a few questions about why we didn't use Warlord traits in the qualifiers. Here is the reasoning.

We have 100 different locations and many of the locations have terrain tables that are 100% ruins or "city fight," tables. If you are on that table and you roll Stealth and Move through cover in ruins you will have a huge advantage in the game. Because we cannot control terrain at qualifier locations we have decided to eliminate the chances of terrain winning/losing the game for you.

Warlord Traits will be back at the Finals in Denver when we can control the terrain deployments.

For those wishing to purchase tickets for the convention weekend. All events will go on sale Aug 6th.

All of our events have hard limits on the number of attendees, It isn't a cleaver marketing ploy when we encourage you to purchase your ticket early, there is a good likelihood that we WILL sell out.

Invitational Players must still purchase tickets after qualifying at their local store to play in the finals! If you show up with a Golden Ticket and have not purchased an Invitational Pass you won't have a slot.

We look forward to seeing you at the Feast of Blades weekend Oct 26-28!

Pasadena

I know Game Empire Pasadena is listed as having a qualifying event but like one of the posters above there is no mention of it. Their normal tournament weekend for 40k is the second Sat of the Month not the 1st. The store is really busy with the weekends pretty much always filled with a tournament, release, or some other large event. I would get in contact with them if you think they are holding a qualifier, because as far as I know they aren't.

Hey Duke, will Imperial Armor army lists be allowed? I recently have bought IA 8 and the Elysians models. Its not an Apocalypse army list (which is what most people think of when i say forgeworld). Its pretty much deep striking guardsmen with no chimeras or tanks. And there is a qualifier at my hometown and I'd like to use the Elysians in it.

@OBC: No, Forgeworld Army (and all forge world rules for that matter) lists aren't allowed in the Qualifiers.

However, we do allow Forgeworld units (Still no army lists) at the 40k Open GT* on the weekend of the convention.

*Note: You cannot play in both the 40k Open GT and the Invitational/ Narrative... They happen at the same time.

Will be playing (and probably losing horribly ) at the rusty scabbard qualifier in lexington kentucky. Don't know how many people will show up, but it sounds like good fun.

I'd also like to thank you for "banning" (I use that only because I can't think of a better word) Warlord traits and mysterious objectives for the qualifiers. We've had a couple of games at our store won or lost recently just due to bad rolling on those 2 tables, and we were really dreading them being in the tournaments. I'm sure that even if you have them at the main event in CO, you'll take steps to mitigate the wackiness of them, but for the qualifiers it was a good idea to "ban" them.

One final question, how are you guys ruling the Aegis defence line, because it's been a real heated topic at my club. I know NOVA is ruling it as ALL the pieces must be touching (I.E. One big long line of pieces) but the way it's written in the book, people are claiming as long as any 2 pieces touch, you're good. People are using this to create "bunkers" for their tanks, using a long and short piece in 4 seperate locations to max their cover saves. If you guys have already addressed this, my bad, but if you haven't, might want to work on that. It'll start a lot of unwanted arguments otherwise :\

I understand that the official tournament requires a 3-paint standard. Is this a requirement for the qualifiers as well or is that up to the individual stores? I signed up at a local store and the guy said he didn't think so but wasn't sure.

I recently started playing a new army that's going to require stripping a few models and painting the entire 1999+1 points.

I will be painting as much as I can, but I'm new to it and not exactly all that fast.

I out with in both 40k and WHFB.

At the qualifiers you can be 100% unpainted if you want to, just realize that it will affect your score. The local TO should be pretty understanding about 6th edition requirements making people update entire armies (like yourself).

At the Invitational itself we will require painting (3 color minimum) but we also understand the demands of a new edition, so enforcement will be according to that understanding while still effecting people who just simply refuse to paint their models...

I'm playing in the quals, and hoping to go to the invitational. I have one worry though.
This is concerning WYSIWYG.
I'm going to have a fully painted Ork army, everything WYSIWYG, accept for my boyz.
I have nothing but choppa boyz, and I'll be running them as shoota boyz.
It's a fairly small thing, but I'd hate to go to all the trouble of preparing and paying my ticket fees, only to be told, "That's not legal" by a player or TO,
And kicked out.
Is this something I should be concerned about?

In my experience, if an event requires WYSIWYG, you would be considered to be proxying, and it would not be allowed within the rules.

Also within my experience, if you showed up with the models, and were polite about it, most store owners/TOs don't have the fortitude to say "no" to you, because they don't want to ruin your day or look like the bad guy, even though you are breaking the rules and expecting everyone else to let you.

Ok, so the answer seems to be "Maybe, if your opponent is cool."
By which it also means that I could qualify, pay my admission price, get to my first round of invitational games at FoB, and get disqualified before round one even begins because my opponent yells "WYSIWYG Foul!"
That's a tough break. Being a horde army, and having only slugga/choppa boyz.
120 of them to be exact.
Looks like I'm not coming.
Good luck all.
