Hi all,

I have had the idea of adding a leman russ to my allied tzeentch cultists (imperial guard count-as). I wanted to make it look a bit antiquated/obolete/old in comparision to a regular russ. What modifications to the existing russ would help achieve this? (e.g making the hull mount look more angular, like the front of a German Tiger I)

Many thanks.

Check out some of the older Epic Leman Russ models. they do look quite a bit different to the current 40k version. The originals, for isntance, had weird cupola-type sponsons.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

You could take a look at the various FW versions as well for differant hulls. The problem you may well find is that the LR design includes allot of features that we contemporary humans would consider antiquated/obolete/old.

You could turn it on its head and introduce modern looking features or variations for differentation then heavily weather the tank to create the old look you desire.

I would buy some 1/35 ww1 or ww2 models from ebay to use.

Maybe something like this.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

Flinty-Had a look at it, I see what you mean unusual 'bubbl'e sponsons and it looks elongated, more like a malcador.

notprop-modern parts could work too seen someone use ablative armour and smoke launchers from a modern tank on their demolisher, could work

Deathshead420-If I went down that route, Id probably canibalise parts, rather than use the tank as a base. I do like the look of that tank, and it's given me an idea. Do you think exposed/part exposed wheels and running gear would help?

Its all a matter of taste I suppose.

I spent at least 45 min looking at all the 1/35 tanks on ebay after I posted that link making noises like the seagulls from Nemo....mine..mine.. mine.. mine.

This is among the first symptoms of the TreadHead virus. Soon youll be stuck in the tank section of your local model store and making tank noises whilst playing with your collection.

As people have said, it's tricky as the Leman Russ already has (to our eyes) an antiquated design.

Canonically, Forgeworld already produce several 'old' tanks, specifically the Malcador:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Imperial_Guard_Super_Heavy_Tanks/MALCADOR-DEFENDER.html

Thunderer:

and Destroyer:

Perhaps you can take some design cues from them? Other possibilities include removing the turret like the Thunderer/Destroyer:

Exposed tracks:

or boxier turrets:

How about trying to find a M3 Lee?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Lee

You could change the main hull cannon to a las-cannon or a heavy bolter and the turret gun to what ever flavour Russ cannon you like.It would look different to a LRBT yet still have the look of a Guard tank just in the shape

the M3 is an idea worth pursuing. Would I need to get 1/35 scale?

I had thought of getting a 1/48 sherman for parts, if went down the 'mod a russ' route. Bought one in the past to make a big trakk, and whilst it wasn't that 'big', the wheels were useful when it was canibalised, and would be ideal for fitting into russ track units, possibly using the tracks too.

This is a 1/35 hetzer for size comparison,

Good idea Ribon. If you wanted to add sponsons you could easily build your own.

I don't know about this project. In the 5th ed fluff section it says that the best bit about the Russ design is that it has barely changed over the years.

If I were you I would block out the hull, make it less streamlined and square. Maybe square out the turret.

You could also try a two other tanks with the older GW turret;-

The original WW1 "mother" tank or the WW2 Matilda.

The newer GW kits have a much more modern style of turret with 3 storage boxes built onto the back of the.
