1) The SW codex says "this character should be held in reserve at the beginning of the game" Does that mean they MUST be held in reserve, or can you choose not to?
2) If a SW IC joins an "Battle Bro" ally unit before the game begins, can that unit outflank with him?

1) he needs to start in reserves. For one your wasting points if you dont and 2 it's part of his oath and need to follow oaths best possible IMO.

1. There is no rule requirement forcing you to start him in reserves. That is a strong suggestion in order to adhere to the fluff behind the Saga.
2. I believe that would only be an option if the Battle Brother unit he is joined to also already has the ability to Outflank. I do not believe that anything in Saga of the Hunter would grant the ability to a joined unit that doesn't already have it, but I absolutely could be mistaken.

I was under the impression that both stealth and outflank were applied to the unit as a whole if one model in the unit had the ability.
Is that incorrect?

That sounds fishy to me - even by 5th Ed standards. Although, I haven't read the 6th Ed book in depth enough to say no for sure. For me to go along with this, I would need to see a rule in the 6th Ed BRB or an appropriate codex that specifically allows it.

Outflank is on of the rules that just requires a model in the unit to have it for the whole unit to benefit.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No, you do not have to start in reserves. It's just a suggestion.
Yes, he can join any Codex unit, or Battle Brother ally unit, and conveys Outflank onto that unit and any dedicated transport they might have.

in theory. But in practice ? A Wolf Lord can't even take Saga of the Hunter. Wolf Priests and Wolf Guard Battle Leaders.
80pts. Wolf Guard Battle Leader with Saga of the Hunter. Join a Battle Bro IG Blob Squad. Happy Days.

Blobs can already outflank with Al'rahem, no need for BBs.
I am now taking a Wolf Priest with SotH. He joins a 10 man GH squad, giving them: Preferred Enemy, Fearless, Outflank and Stealth. Pretty decent deal and great for taking Linebreaker. Oh and acute senses lets you reroll table edge. Automatically Appended Next Post: Outflank also allows vehicles now, so you could embark him on a transport with a squad and the whole shebang could outflank.
Lastly, the reserve requirement is a saga thing. Sagas are not required to do those, but they are very fluffy.

aaaah. Fair enough.
Outflanking Terminators in a BA Raven is better than a kick in the teeth surely.

Not much aince they can't assault and might as well just come in on a board edge since they are flying.

Edit : Someone already posted my idea
My idea is to have the priest stick with a blob to give them stealth, outflanking, and ATSKNF.

I looked it up when I got home and you were right. For both Stealth AND Outflank it says "If at least one model in the unit" has the ability then it confers the ability to the entire unit.
Kind of nice.
