Sarah Palin still waiting for her Republican National Convention invite
'I’m sure I’m not the only one accepting consequences for calling out both sides of the aisle for spending too much money, putting us on the road to bankruptcy, and engaging in crony capitalism,' the conservative firebrand says.
BY KRISTEN A. LEE / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Will Mitt Romney invite Mama Grizzly to the dance?

Sarah Palin has not yet received an invitation to speak at or attend the Republican National Convention this August in Tampa, Newsweek reported.

“What can I say?” Palin told Newsweek in an email. “I’m sure I’m not the only one accepting consequences for calling out both sides of the aisle for spending too much money, putting us on the road to bankruptcy, and engaging in crony capitalism.”

“In accepting those consequences,” she added, “one must remember this isn’t Sadie Hawkins and you don’t invite yourself and a date to the Big Dance.”

The magazine said the Romney campaign did not respond to a question about Palin’s role at the convention, but one adviser associated with Team Romney indicated that she may be prohibited from speaking under her contract with FOX News.

Palin appeared dubious, however, about that reasoning.

“It’s true I’m prohibited from doing some things,” Palin told Newsweek, “but this is the first I’ve heard anyone suggest that as an excuse, er, reason to stay away from engaging in the presidential race. I’m quite confident Fox’s top brass would never strip anyone of their First Amendment rights in this regard.”

Palin has not been one of Romney’s boosters. After appearing to favor some of Romney’s more conservative rivals during the Republican primary, she has since only offered him only tepid endorsements.

Last week, Palin said on FOX News that Romney should do more to energize the conservative base, advising him to “light our hair on fire.”

The possible sidelining of Palin is reportedly frustrating Tea Party activists, who have also been slow to accept the former Massachusetts governor as the Republican nominee.

“Romney’s just not a fighter,” Jenny Beth Martin, who heads the Tea Party Patriots, told Newsweek. “That’s why it would be good for him to have someone like Palin speaking at the convention. He needs to do something to rile up his base, to make them enthusiastic.”

"I am not invided to the party for the guy I don't really like."

Maybe it is just me, but I think that any apperance at the convention would be for her to boost herself, and not for her to boost Romney. But what do I know.

If you can get excited about a person that sells herself as "homey", and "down to earth", but apparently doesn't know how a Sadie Hawkins dance works, then there is a problem.

But why would she know what a Sadie Hawkins dance is?

That kind of party is just... IMMORAL and IMPROPER for a lady such as her!

Meh, a quick look at Palin support numbers will tell you she's more famous than relevant. About the only group where her support numbers get halfway decent is with hardline conservatives and people affiliated with tea party, and even then they're not that great.

Romney knows this, and knows chasing her support would risk energising the Democrat base far more than it'd help his own. Making the noises he'd have to make to win her support would probably help overall in Florida, but it's almost certainly do more harm than good in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

So Romney does what he has to do to win, and ignores Palin. Palin might be smart enough to know this, but whether she is or not, she's predictably going to keep on making noise about easy, populist issues "government spends too much money" and remain a FOX news/tea party darling. It'll never get her political legitimacy, but it will appeal to the tea party set, which means she can keep riding the gravy train of fringe politics.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Also, that line about her contract with FOX potentially stripping her of first amendment rights is so stupid the vein on my forehead just returned to the size of it's heyday in Palin's 2008 VP run.

Of course Fox would never strip her 1st ammendment rights. Fox knows she has a constitutional right to say whatever she wants, Palin just doesn't know that she doesn't have a constitutional right to a contract with Fox if they don't like what she says.

Actually, there were a lot of talking heads around when Juan Williams lost his job who kept screeching about his "first amendment rights" and how NPR violated his "right to free speech". I think there is a significant portion of major political figures who truly don't understand how that works even though they really should since it's not exactly a complicated concept.

EDIT: After doing some googling, no, turns out it was mostly Sarah Palin back then too.

So at least she's consistent in not understanding how that works.

I don't think its necessarily the political figures so much as the people they're speaking to. And, really, I'm not sure its a lack of understanding so much as a willingness to believe whatever supports their side. Sort of like how the official is clearly blind when a guy on your team gets hit, but calling the game too tightly when a guy on your team gets penalized.

Her career reminds me of what has become of William Shatner in that she is a sort of parody of herself.

Sarah Palin is the poster child for extreme, exploitative and ignorant right wing policy. Romneys right to snub her. She's toxic.

Wow, okay, so it appears people in this thread really don't get Palin.

She's not being genuine. She's like Colbert. She's doing an over-the-top parody of right-wing politicians.

That has to be the answer, right? I mean... no former politician and journalist could genuinely be that uninformed.

Right?

Also, please help a poor french-canadian understand the intricacies of Southern mating rituals ; what's a Sadie Hawkins Dance, and why would it be improper? Because the ladies asks the lads to dance? Really???

A Sadie Hawkins (most often its called "turnabout" now) is when the girls ask the guys to the dance. It means basically nothing now because the social expectation of guys asking girls to dances is much, much weaker; at least where I grew up.

The analogy is bad, in this case, because at a Sadie Hawkins the girl is invited by the presiding organization. She doesn't "invite herself," she just gets to go because she is a member of the relevant group (usually high school or college). Further, you never invite "yourself and a date" to any dance. You were invited to the dance by the organization (In the US usually a school.), and you invited a date.

So complicated. Where I come from, you show up to any spot with alcool and gals, let your tongue peircing subreptitiously show, and when one gal's been digging in your mouth with her tongue for 2 minutes, you know you've done something right.

An awareness for wedding bands/furious boyfriends might be required tho...

The analogy is bad
