OK so I got a fairly large Chaos fleet off Ebay (2500+ points) but they are in a wee bit of a sorry state. Most of the flight bases are snapped at the top where the stand inserts into the model and of course, the plastic nub has been glued so it has snapped of cleanly and is now embedded in the model. So I need to repair them. Google tells me I should use wire from a wire coat hanger but has anyone got any other suggestions? Even better, a link to a tutorial would be spiffing. I am assuming I will need to drill out the plastic remnants to make a new hole and then attach a new stand/wire but how to go about attaching that to a base?

What I'd do is drill out the plastic, but drill a hole slighty bigger, roughly to the size of the stem,(not the small spindley thing at the top)
This gives a more stable stand that won't snap off.
that or buy the magnetic stands from http://www.ninjamagic.com/
Hope that helps mate

Quick and easy is to drill the bottom of the ships to the size of top of the stem (with the fiddly bit snapped off which it sounds like all of yours are). Then just insert the stem into the bottom of the ship. I wouldnt glue them in either just press them in and then you can remove them for transport. Of course you could replace the fiddly bit with a metal dowel on my battleships i have replaced the entire stem with brass rod.
Edit* lol what he said ^

Yeah, good idea about drilling to the stem. The only thing I am not sure about is that I don't particularly like the GW flying bases, the way they taper into the base, the y look a bit too chunky and obtrusive to me. I was leaning a bit more too some sort of wire or brass rod replacement since I am going to have to drill the ship anyway.
Cheers for the tips though!

I just got some 1/8" brass rod, and replaced all the flying stems with it, and also the bases with small and large circles of MDF

Ah yes, I saw your tutorial on YouTube via a Google search and another wargaming website (might have been Warseer - I can't remember). Anyway, I ended up using more or less the same method (although I had to go out and buy some bolt cutters since the metal rod from B&Q appears to be the hardest substance known to man )

Some of that can be quite difficult to cut, the brass i used is just grounding wire. Its easy to cut with a pair of diagional cutters and its plenty flexable so you can position the ship (for instance if you glued the stem crooked) but not so flexable that it bends on its own.
