The years of anticipation for Diablo III have brought about a number of marathon play sessions since its release on May 15, but one fan's obsession with the game has proven fatal.
An 18-year old Diablo III player in Taiwan was found dead recently after a 40-hour marathon session with the game, reports the Australian Associated Press.
The player, who has only been identified as Chuang, reportedly booked a room at his local Internet café before diving into the game, not stopping for sleep or food the entire time. An employee of the café found him passed out on a table Sunday.

He woke up when approached, but collapsed after a few steps and was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, but authorities noted that the long period of sitting still could have created blood clots, which proved fatal.
Sadly, it's not the first game-marathon-related death in Taiwan this year. In February, Chen Rong-yu had a fatal heart attack while playing in an Internet café in Taipei while playing online smash hit, League of Legends. Fellow players, though, didn't notice he had died for another nine hours.
Deaths in Internet cafes are rare, but happen from time to time when players concentrate so intensely on their games, that they ignore factors like the body's need for sleep and food.
Last year, a 30 year-old Chinese gamer died after staying up for three consecutive days, barely eating or drinking anything. And last August, 20 year-old Chris Staniforth suffered a pulmonary embolism after a marathon session on his Xbox.
The deaths underscore the risk of game addiction, which more and more people are becoming worried about as the industry grows.

Yea i agree, if these people didnt get addicted to video games like that it would have been drugs/sex/thrills and they would have eventually had the same fate. That kind of addictive personality is always going to lead to trouble..... ehhhhhh..... what did we pay for the new rule book again...lol

Wargaming hasn't taken anyone's life yet. Now that everything is finecast I think GW players may be safe though.

I would disagree with that. I bet you that someone in the world during its 99 year history (first miniwarge is arguably H. G. Wells LIttle Wars) that somebody has either murder over it, or some guy chocked on a model.

I saw some close calls back when GW stocked the big 100 pound Warhammer Quest boxed game and foolishly (or sadistically) put them on the higher shelves.

Also, when DreadFleet was released there were Black Friday at Walmart-like riots at the GW Bunker in Bowie and people almost got trampled. Heard reports it was like that at other GWs worldwide. Or it may have been when Dreadfleet was pulled from the shelves to get it out of the store.

Is it just me, or is it hard to care when somebody dies of something this stupid? I mean, when an innocent dies from gang warfare, it's tragic and sad beyond belief (I'm 100% serious here), but when an idiot dies from not getting up from playing his video game and his body starts shutting down...I just feel like it's Earth's way of cleaning out the genepool. Seriously, I just hope he passed on before he could pass on his seed. We don't need that genetic makeup dirtying up already muddied water...

Seriously Dakka, you guys make me sound like a real insensitive prick here-so many deaths are discussed here, and so many hate-crimes happen, and I'm slightly worse than apathetic to this guy passing on, and I feel like that Kansas minister who wanted the government to kill homosexuals seriously needs to die for his hate-speech, as well as a continuous group of others. Can't you guys discuss flowers and goodness for once? Lol. I want to be the nice guy...you guys just make it so hard at times.

You are really taking what he said out of context. He never said that the government should kill him, or keeping the human race clean. Also does that men we should feel sorry for the kid who had no common sense, and sad down on a computer for 40 hours straight? Its no different than a guy drinking and driving and gets himself killed, I am not happy about his death, but I am not going to feel sorry for him either. Same goes for the kid. Actions have consequences. Also there is a big difference between a learning disability, and somebody being to stupid to take a break from a 40 hour video game session.

Yeah. I am going to take the moderate position of this kid was an idiot who deserved to die. When you look at the long scope of human history, and people enduring beyond comprehension their toils and tribulations, surviving ridiculous struggles and nonsense - and this ass can't be bothered to stand up every twelve hours and stretch.... I know I shouldn't but I had to chuckle at that one.

Although as others have noted, as these are certainly cases of 'Darwin award' fatalities, I'm not too worried for my psyche.

Why have I got the feeling that once this goes mainstream news, there will be a tirade of 'concerned mothers' asking for a blanket ban on video games before every child in the civilised world meets a similar end?

Ok, in all seriousness, How can you let that happen? I mean, how can you just stay sat playing one game for all that time and not eat, drink, feel the need to move, etc? I don't understand how you cannot feel the need to stop.

How can you not get up though?

I occasionally raid in wow, but I dislike them because they last for 4 hours, so I do it less these days, but even then, it used to seriously piss me off sitting still for so long, so I get up every half hour to stretch my legs or say "brb bathroom" just to take a minute to splash some cold water on my face and get a drink or something.. I cant fathom how you can be so engrossed in a game you just fething sit there for 12 hours, let alone 40!

I'm a WoW player, although I don't raid a whole lot, I have been known to loose four of five hours to it on the odd day. However, tea breaks, walking off to grab a snack. Popping outside for fresh air etc seem par for the course.

This kid sounds like he was living the life of an average cubicle worker, exept he was playing a video game instead of manipulating spreadsheets and PowerPoint.

In more positive news, my daughter has beaten five of the monsters in Shadow of the Colossus and didn't need a 40 hour marathon to do it.

While i agree with the sentiment. I think you'll find anything is possible. I have an addictive personality I get way to into things, sometimes they have been very bad for me. I can play a game of 40k or fantasy and be so into it that i will not notice that i'm hungry until after the game. Hence this is why i don't play RPG's anything with a break in it allows me to separate from it.

Whatever the outcome of this investigation, the deaths of these 4 boys at the hands of a simple board game will forever haunt the halls of the industry, and share prices in companies that produce these games have already been predicted to take a sharp fall over the course of the coming days.
