Which is better? I'm leaning towards bolters... at the cost of -1 attack in hand to hand, they get to rapid fire before they charge (relentless, so they can), an additional overwatch shot if they are charged, and the ability to fire at 12"-24" ranges. Not much, but they can do SOMETHING now at ranges longer than 12".

Of course, that hand to hand attack is str5, and if with a chaplain, it re-rolls to hit and to wound. Its a very good strength 5 attack

I'm leaning towards bolters, but anyone else got any opinions?

Bolters are always a solid choice, 6E has made them even more viable.

bolt pistol+power axe my friend.
Say hello to 5 (!!!) WS5 S6 AP2 attacks on the charge. All for 35 points.
Throw in a reclesiarch for re-rolls to hit and to wound and you have a unit that can kill any other infantry unit in CC bar none.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

well yea testify, I'm doing that for 2 marines in each squad, with a third packing a power fist / thunderhammer.

The OTHER 7 guys though... bolters or bp/ccw?

Bolters, you don't need the extra attack, and they are relentless. The math on the bolters is better in a generic opponent fight and its the cheapest option. You should put in a sprinkle of power weapons because DC die like any other mooks to a truly dedicated CC unit.

Bolters are good for all the reasons listed above but do not benefit from furious charge which is built into the cost per model, and aren't effected by the presence of a chaplain which is really what makes DC shine in my opinion.

I think it also depends on whether you're running a single squad of DC or multiple squads due to Astorath. Having one or two small squads with bolters may not be a bad idea.

If I were to take a big unit, like 20, I'd consider half and half or all bolters with maybe a couple special weapons, otherwise I will probably do chainswords and bolt pistols. As for weapons, yeah, due to volume of attacks I'd probably not get too many power weapons but maybe one power fist, and power weapons of the generic sort. Losing initiative is a bummer but I'd probably opt for a couple power axes, just because it's absolute insanity on those fellas.
