I have taken a break from 40k and am drifting back into fantasy for a while. I think I have played about 4 games of 8th ed so most of the rules are still new. I have been challenged to a 3500 point game Dark Elves vs. my Slayer army (from Storm of Chaos). I can’t decide whether or not to put the slayers in a horde or not. I don’t really thing they need it, they are unbreakable and have 2 attacks a peace plus the supporting attack from the 2nd rank. So I don’t really think they need the extra attacks, I would rather have the rank bonuses. However I am sure I will see some hoarded up spearelves. Can you fellows with more 8th games give any advice?

Why would you hoard Slayers? Do you not want anyone else to have any or are you just compulsive?

(the word you're looking for is HORDE.)

The biggest problem I see with it is that Slayers are limited to 30 models per unit. So if I put them in a horde they will only get 2 for a rank bonus.

I vote horde, the extra attacks are more likely to get you a higher resolution than the extra rank. and being unbreakable your need for a static resolution is greatly reduced. Better to kill more I would think.

Not to spend too long on my soapbox here, but I think folks look at this thing the wrong way. You don't (or at least shouldn't) necessarily choose to "go horde" during army creation and never look back.

You should always be prepared to change formations. There's some matchups where horde's going to be a good idea- against a lot of monsters, its nice to get as many attacks in as possible before that thunderstomp, and then you can always reform once it looks like that back rank is going to be gone.

Against enemies you don't expect to do much damage to and are just there to last as long as possible, deploy deep.

I understand that the question may still be a matter of whether to take a full 30 or some smaller number- I've heard of many players having some success with the 30, though I don't have the models painted to try it myself.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

I have 4 units of 30 painted up. In the old days I really just used the units to deliver the characters and hold things up unit the doomseekers can hit them. It always worked well against every thing except that damn sea guard list. I think that might still work.
