Hi all,

i have a dialema,

I want to make a base of which a Stormtalon Gunship is flying, but i dont want to use a flying stem, this would be easy is it was a nurgle blight drone or a walker as it could be jumping of things but i just cant seem to figure out a way to do it.

Ideally i would like it to be flying in an environment that would look good with chaos.

I would love it if someone could give us a few ideas please

lewis.

Is it because the GW flight stand is pretty ugly? Because it is. You could mount it on an acrylic rod which is far less obtrusive and smarter looking.

If you're up for quite a challenge, mounting it smashing through some cities of death buildings bursting into the midst of some chaos cultists would be pretty amazing.

You could use some heavy duty metal rod running up the side of the building (painted as a downspout etc.) to hold the model.

i thought about acrylic rod it would look better, but ive got it into my head now, and i really would love to have no rods, or have them hidden by something, i just really cant figure it out

and thats a good idea with the smashing through stuff, but i want it to be simplistic it may turn out too dynamic, im wanting all of the focus on the Stormtalon its gonna be heavily converted

You could have it hovering with its thrusters belching smoke.

Or do what I did and have a hapless target belching smoke

You want it to look like in the sky? Flying free? Or something who look like it is hovering?

For a hovering thing: smoke and fire will do a great work, coming from the turbines, goying to the ground.

Have models on the ground shooting at it - stiff wires coming from the weapons of the unit modelled to look like smoke or fire trails hitting the flier in different places to hold it up steady.
A unit of missile launcher havoks would work possibly.

Or pin it swooping low over some ruins/ city of death tiles

good ideas people, yeah i thought the city walls or tiles would be good but if i pinned it to walls, it may look like its crashing into them, and i want it on an angle like its flying tactically

At that point then, if you don't want any form of support to be showing...you need to figure out a manner with which to hide the support well (barring magnetic repulsion...but those are very difficult to set up on static models and nearly impossible on something which will be moved on a regular basis).

If you take a look at the flame breath in that picture, it was "sculpted" using the expanding foam insulation. A mold was then created which was rotocast using clear resin. The resin was then painted and had LEDs inserted in it in order to make it glow like it does.

You can do a similar effect either using one of the weapons to disguise the support or modeling it as exhaust from the thrusters. While the illuminated clear cast resin would add an extra level of oomph to the design - you can paint the foam as is to pretty good effect.

apart from creating a truss overtop of your gaming space from which you will suspend the gunship by fishing wire: I have no idea what else to tell you.

Otherwise, you may just have to experiment, as it sounds like you want something that is difficult to describe, or difficult for us here to understand...

best of luck, and what ever you try, post pics!!!!

Here was my idea/alternative. I ditched the plastic stem altogether, and decided to use the jets as the mounts...

Great idea, then get some of the bits to put at the end of the guns that make it look as if the weapons are firing off rounds, the exhaust from the engines at a hover would look great!

Else shove a solid metal rod through a wing from a ruined building it is passing while on a strafing run. Or the World War Z zombie climb effect from cultists or Nids reaching up to take it down... Crazy ideas mentioned can lead to insperation.

In addition to the smoke/flame, look at other bits of terrain that are handy. My "Space Elf" army is entirely done using different terrain elements instead of flying bases. They are desertish themed and I carved foam to look like various sandstone formations. The jetbikes are flying around them and only a small steel rod connects the vehicle to the base, usually on an angle, so that it is only visible when you look at it from the "wrong" angle.

Ive done the same sorts of work using trees, snow formations, cave type items and even water where the wires are hidden in the waves or wakes. Balancing can be problematic on the heavier resin models I use most often, but with relatively light and hollow plastic...it shouldnt take much effort to balance them.

Have you considered painting the stand? A simple flat black doesn't draw the eye the way a nice clear plastic crystal spire does. Then add something to help mask out the base.
This one was done with a cherry tree in bloom to match my armies theme.
