There are many special abilities that can only target ICs. GK Heroic Sacrifice, rapier strike, DE Mindphase Guantlets, Soul Trap. They can be used on any MC or IC but not on squad sergeants. I propose to expand those targeting restrictions to any character in a challenge.

Challenge Crowe with your nob, might lose your nob in a pit.
Challenge a brotherhood champion with your Wolf Guard, might get beat down by rapier.
Challenge a DE archon with your IG sergeant, might get your soul trapped.
Challenge a Haemoculuc with your terminator aspiring champion, might lose your attacks to his attacks.

I dunno, don't DE with the soultrap thing get buffs to strength and all that? or is that a different piece of kit? Because if they do, then they could knock of 2 or 3 sergeants, and then be unstoppable. Which shouldn't happen.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

you would be high strength, but with no access to AP2 they arent unstoppable. Even after killing 3 characters and passing their tests anything in 2+ armor will still shred them.
Also if you dont want him to get his soul trap powered up then dont accept the challenge.

So avoid stuff in 2+ armour. Even several marine special characters only get regular power armour, as does Crowe, and I don't see much in the way of terminator spam, so it isn't a big problem.

Crowe has 2+ armor as do all SM special characters in the GK book, Inquisitor valaria has a 3+. Roughly half the SM special characters not in TDA have 2+ saves.
