Hey guys, not entirely sure where to put this, so please forgive me if it's misplaced.

With the new codexes completely replacing the old ones, does the same apply to models? As in, will a new codex mean an entirely new model range?

I'm going to give Chaos a try and I'm basically wondering if it makes sense to start collecting models now, or will everything I buy now be replaced by a new range in a month?

Doesn't mean an entirely new model range, but it does mean new models coming out in general. Models don't get invalidated generally, and there's no need to keep up to date with the most recent figures. I have a Space Marine army using models dating back to 1986 running alongside modern figs and it's perfectly legal.

Old models are legal. Anyone who says different is wrong.

Zoats.

Most old models stay legal, even if they no longer have rules you can always use them to represent something close within their new rules. In general though it mostly doesn't seem to go far passed weapons sometimes; most not even changing at all.

Alright, but can we expect them to publish an entirely new range of models? Like the finecast HQ choices aren't that old and I was wondering if they'd release new ones.

Not a new range, like if a new tau codex, the firewarriors wont get an update.
And Ragnar didnt get an upgrade so no HQ's tend to stay the same(except lemartes, but he was a trainwreck)

Alright, so if I bought a few plague marines etc, I should still expect that at least some of the models will remain the same then.

Thanks guys, sorry for the stupid questions

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask

For chaos perhaps some of the older more iconic characters would change. The cults (EC, PM, TS, KB) may change, though I'm not familiar with the range. They'd probably phase out hybrids though.

Then look at the Avatar from the Eldar range. I think it's from about 2-3rd edition and still going well.

Most of the armies in 40k don't see huge releases when they get a new codex. The last two years have been different because:
  • The change to Finecast

  • The age of the codex being replaced

  • There are some examples of units getting completely replaced when a new codex comes out (Pariah's being replaced with Lychguard), but there is usually something in the new codex that those models can be used for.

Rumors for Chaos Space Marines suggest that the core of the army is going to be relatively unchanged, just don't go buying metal if you can help it.

The Avatar is from 2nd edition. So are the Warp Spiders and Wraithguard. Of the three, the one in dire need of a new model is the spiders. With only three models ever released (exarch and variant spider troopers (slightly different poses) in the last 18 or so years - when the original aspects all got several redos (Banshees, Dire Avengers, scorpions, reapers, even swooping hawks all got more than one release).

New codex generally means a few new models - but they won't replace the entire range for the codex. It's just not cost effective for them to do it - not to mention the risk of it biting them in the arse because miniatures gamers aren't like magic players (many of whom WILL dump their entire collection when the decks come out).
