Does anyone know of a paint primer I can put into an air brush? I don't think the primer from a can is working for me going on smooth like it should.

Don't think they do a primer as such, but Vallejo reckon you can spray on there air brush paints without the need for any primer - as long as you've preped the surface well, which means thoroughly cleaning any resin kits. I tend to use one of the light greys or white paint for priming though, depending on what colour I wan to end up with.

Pretty much any of them. I use Tamiya and Gunze primers for the most part though. You can also decant rattle cans and use that as well.

Vallejo also makes a primer in their Model Air line.

If you prefer the non-flammable primers, the various brushable primers (Vallejo, Reaper et al) will also work - just need to thin them like regular paints and all that.

Try the Vallejo Polyurethane Primers, they work great with an airbrush.

From my personal experience:

Cheers!

K I got the Vallejo primer, thinner, and cleaner. Does anyone know the ratio roughly for the primer to thinner or a good starting point?

To the same consistency of thinning any airbrush paint; about milk. (there are dozens of threads on this).

Its a bit subjective, so do some experiments.

Or get the model air spray primer - but I think it only comes in grey.

If your spray can is too thick, try "the armory" brand - I find it to give a excellent coverage without obscuring details.
(there are also MANY threads on this topic as well - in fact, one was just commented on today - look in the list).

One point:
I have noticed that when using primers in an airbrush, you have to clean the brush more thoroughly, and clean your tip while working if you are spraying for a while....local humidity and temp will vary this of course, but keep an eye on your tip.

Best of luck!!!!

The Vallejo PU primers go on neat (no thinning).

Flush through with water, then swab the cup clean with thinners (don't flush immediately with thinners; this can make the primer gunky, and it'll end up in your nozzle). Only use the thinners to flush once you've got rid of most of the paint and do so with the needle out.
