If you believe the internet hype, either this act is:

The Emperor Revealing Himself to Mankind
or
Horus Betraying The Emperor.

Personally, I'm adopting a 'wait and see' approach to this whole shebang, as I've seen F2p done well, and totally screwed up.

What's TOR?

And what's F2p?

I'm assuming those are gamer terms. A gamer I am not.

TOR=The Old Republic

F2P=Free to play.

Significant because TOR used to require a subscription, but as subscriptions seem to be dying off I don't see this as surprising.

Apparently, not being particularly good may have had something to do with it as well.

It wasn't that bad, but they put to way to much money into it to the point that the only way it wouldn't disappoint is if it did WoW numbers. WoW was/is a cultural phenomena, and you can't really force that kind of thing. The game itself is solid, but not so groundbreaking or awe inspiring that you just have to play it.

I think, at least for now, MMORPGs are a bit played out. There needs to be some major innovation in order to get m to play one again (GW2 is not a major innovation).

Simplest problem with The Old Republic is that it was not going to win Korea over.

I know that sounds silly, but Korea has a love affair with Blizzard's properties that is...well, it's downright terrifying.

Agreed, thought it is a step in the right direction. Though I would say that sub based MMO are dead

Unless you are WoW.

Which is good for me as a WoW fan, but bad as a general MMO fan, as it is getting unlikely firms will take as big a risk on a new MMO.

Things like the planned WoD (World of Darkness/Vampire the Masquerade) MMO from CCP for example, may not get done. Which for me would be a crying shame.

CCP has been collecting money from EvE Online for years (the most successful sub based MMO after WoW.) Granted, even that is in a slump now, as is WoW itself.

Personally, I think that going at least partially F2P is a good move for TOR, as the single player story mode, for lack of a better term, below lvl 50 was very good and likely to get people hooked in. Where the game struggles is end game content, but I hear with the raised level cap, they will be extending the story another chapter or so.

Same here. I don't plan on cancelling my sub anytime soon, but if this move brings in more players and cool "premium" stuff for me, ... (wtb more custom gear)

On a related note, my Sith Duelist finally made it to level 50, whee!

I've got way too many alts.

That's one thing I'm glad to see: it will be a lot cheaper to level all my alts...

It's not that hard of a thing to do, if people would stop looking at WoW and saying "WE HAVE TO BE LIKE THEM GUYS!"......

I, for one, agree with what the Extra Credits guys said. MMORPGs may be dead, but we have only just started to branch out in other areas (MMOFPS with Planetside, for instance)

I thought the F2P was basically the prologue and chapter 1.

So for all intents and purposes, a glorified demo.

The only thing I've found very frustrating was how coy with actual details they have been. What races will be available for character creation, for example, on F2P accounts.

The article I saw said that all races and classes would be available, but my guess is that some of the features won't be available to non-subscribers.

If you get a class to 50, whatever race you did so with will be available to all classes and alliances after that. What that means is that if you level a Sith Pureblood to 50 on the Empire side to 50 you could make a Sith Pureblood Jedi on the Rebellion side after that. Each class gets a class buff at 30 (I think) that carries over to any other class you play if you get it to 50. Jedi Counselor gets a +5% resistance to all non-physical damage (just making an example, I don't know what it is myself), so if you got Counselor to 50 and then leveled an Imperial Agent, when the Agent got to 30 it would get both the Agent Buff and the Counselor Buff. I'm betting those kinds of perks will only be available to subscribers, or you can buy them through micro-transactions in some capacity.

Well, the gameplay of TOR is certainly somewhat similar to WoW - yet I do find their content to be refreshingly different and much more immersive. The ability to solve missions in different ways and develop a personality for your character based on your selection of dialogue rather than just clicking through a series of "accept -> complete" quests really does a lot for me.

There have been other attempts at doing MMORPGs, but so far they all failed (unless you count EVE as an RPG I guess). There's just too many players appreciating a lack of complexity and difficulty, even if there are constant complaints about exactly these things making the successful games bland. People, eh?

I'm sure they will update their FAQ on this in the coming days/weeks - that's how most games who do this transition work.
My guess would be that you can only create humans, and they're prolly going to restrict quick travel.

Same. Personally, I think it's the over saturation these days. I understand it's was everywhere the first time around, but it's everywhere now.

After 9 movies, 3 cartoon series(plus a mini-series and a special), a holiday special, thousands of books, a number of video games, toys and merchandise of every style, color, and brand, and the delayed-but still-coming live action TV series, I'm burned out.

It's one of hte reasons I pretty much ignore anything but KOTOR. I no longer give a gak about Luke Skywalker.

Don't tell Lucas. He might realize the prime era has gotten dull.

Though, the current ongoing's with Ben Skywalker almost make me want to read the books, even if all they've done is realizing kill Mara Jade was a stupid idea and have cloned her into a new character.

I'd like a Battlefront 3 if they put the ships back in on planetary levels(while keeping the space fights, but with the AI designed to actually use the capital ship turrets as they were pretty useless) and the only way I'd take a RC2 would be if they scrapped everything but the squad command system(the damage/health problem is just too skewed and ruined the game and the lack of co-op made me want my money back).

Personally, I prefer the Legacy era. The best aspects of all the previous epochs mixed together for an interesting new situation set ~120 years after the original trilogy: The reigning Emperor is actually a good guy. The Galactic Alliance lost the war with the Empire, its last defenders reduced to a rogue fleet on the run. The Sith are back in force (no more "Rule of Two") and play everyone. The galaxy, still suffering from the damage done in the Yuuzhan Vong war, has become a dark place. And Skywalker's last descendent is a drug-addict bounty hunter.

Spoiler:

Dramatis Personae from left to right:
Shado Vao, Jedi Knight
Moff Konrad Rus, Head of the Imperial Mission
Wolf Sazen, Jedi Knight
Antares Draco, Leader of the Imperial Knights
Sigel Dare, Imperial Knight
Ganner Krieg, Imperial Knight
Marasiah Fel, Princess, Heiress to the Galactic Empire
Roan Fel III, Emperor of the Galactic Empire
Astraal Vao, Missionary of the Imperial Mission
Luke Skywalker, Force Spirit, occasionally appears to Cade
Deliah Blue, Bounty Hunter, Chief Mechanic of the "Mynock"
Cade Skywalker, Bounty Hunter, Owner of the "Mynock"
Jariah Syn, Bounty Hunter, Co-pilot of the "Mynock"
Darth Krayt, Leader of the One Sith
Darth Talon, Warrior of the One Sith, Darth Krayt's "Hand"
Darth Nihl, Warrior of the One Sith
