I was wondering if there was a way that the title of the 40k Army Lists sub forum could be standardized? It would help immensely in the searching of different threads and posts. It would also make looking at the thread list a lot better.

Possibly something like the following
Blood Angels - 1000 Pts. - Jumpers?

Basically:
[Race] - [Points] - [Quick description?]

Maybe a pain to implement, but if it starts, possibly can catch on like in the Swap Shop?

I'm certainly in favour of the idea, but it would require dedicated moderators to police, and it is a thankless and dull task to do so. Anyone want to offer some suggestions on the best way to make it work? I can code in a popup message demanding it meets that title structure, but those sorts of popups get ignored with annoying frequency.

I can't see it working any other way besides however the swap shop works. You could probably add a restriction to the titles, but it'd be way more work than worth and in the end. It'd be easier to get a mod or two and enforce it on new threads rather than existing. Eventually the old will be phased out and the new method adopted.

The problem being, of course, that mods are a finite resource. The fact that we have folks who police the Swap Shop voluntarily is a source of constant amazement. Talk about a thankless task.

I would voluntarily check that. Honest, without trolling.

Rather hard for me though.

Yeah, but then we'd have to promote you to Army List MOD. And as we know, power corrupts.

I wouldn't mind doing it either. Any way I can feed back to Dakka is great (I can't do DCM because of my parents)

It's a good idea and I think it has been raised in here in the past but as Lego says, there are some hurdles to overcome, the main one being that even if you do have a dedicated mod to police it, people generally still tend to ignore title formats. We have had quite a strict and unambiguous title format enforced in the Swap Shop for some time now; it is detailed in the posting rules sticky along with illustrations on use and every time I edit someone's thread I include an example of the correct format to use in reply to their thread so they don't even have to read the sticky. And still....

I spend on average 2 hours during the course of the day fixing titles and believe me, it gets boring very quickly. I'm sure the other Swap Mods probably spend a similar amount of time too. Unfortunately, we still have to do it each and every day because people just don't read stickies, they don't read rules threads and posting guidelines, they ignore pop up reminders and most bizarrely, they seem to ignore the fact that just about every other thread in the Swap Shop is formatted along the same guidelines. The same could be said of the new GW Specialist Games and Misc Games sections - both the sticky threads in there ask people to put the name of the game in [ ] brackets in the title so that people can quickly see/search for a specific game and yet hardly anyone does so - and this is in subforums which are new.

I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to volunteer their time to fix thread titles but believe me, most people would quickly become burnt out after doing it for any length of time. Frankly, I get sick of doing it in the Swap Shop but luckily enough, there are other tasks to break the monotony of it. In an ideal world, it would be self-regulating but such a thing just won't happen until people start reading stickies.

Yeah, short of having a separate posting page for those forums where the Subject is replaced with several specific fields, I'm not sure how you could get it to work.

Is this is like political office? Anyone who wants to do it, shouldn't be allowed to?

Same here bro, same here. Also, even though many wouldn't believe it, I am a fair person when it comes to modding. #shamelessadvert.

Probably, but you also shouldn't go after the ones that don't want to do it to the point they'd do a lackluster job.

So anyone who wants to isn't allowed, and anyone who doesn't want to isn't allowed?

That leaves... anyone who doesn't pay attention to the question?

Nope, a paradox which creates the energy required to create the entities known as mods.

True. This would possibly help a bit. Possibly a way to limit the titles? Is there anyway to incorporate what Librarium Online does (the addition of the point level graphic with each thread title)? http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/space-marine-army-lists/ I mean adding Mods to it would help, this could possibly be accomplished through checking whom posts the most in the Army Lists Section, seeing as we can now see the breakdown of our posts, and offering said positions to those individuals. Also I believe it can be offered to a few. I think the Army List Forum gets roughly 20-30 threads a day? So you figure one to two individuals, maybe three to monitor it? It seems that Swap Shop has caught on minus the few offenders.

Possibly a limit on the number of characters in the title may help as well? Possibly add some more listing requirements to thread creation, if possible?

I would also have no problem putting myself in as a regulator, I believe with mature community, such an implementation would not be too difficult. I figure it could be attempted, and worse case scenario abandoned with no harm/no foul.

Would a multiple-choice menu help? One drop-down for Faction, a box for points value, and then a larger box for a brief description?

It would most likely help... but would take quite awhile to code I imagine.

@MadMaverick76: As described above, finding volunteers isn't the problem. Keeping them is. It is a thankless, boring and endless task.

@4oursword: Lego is cursing you right now since that would be coding.

That’s insane...

Maybe we should make title editing a punishment for rule 1 infractions...

Like you have to fix 50 titles and then turn them into a mod who looks them over and then (if you did good) lifts your quick reply box ban.

Probably work

While we're wishlisting, I'd like an enforceable standard template for displaying army lists.

HQ
Captain Scowlypants Fisticus
- Power fists x 4

Troops
Tactical Squad x10
- Shiny Sword
- Water Balloon Launcher

And so on. I know it'll never happen, but I gotta shut my eyes and picture it.

Ha!

I'm picturing it now:

# Dakkacode release 5.38 Changelog:
#
# - fixed obscure bug
# - revamped army lists subforum
# - provides world peace

Totally adding the last line next time I update anything around work, just to see if anyone notices.
