I would like to know what is the equivelent of a devlan mud wash in the updated citadel paints.

Agrax Eartshade

Which I bought this week. But its not as good as Devlan mud in my opinion. I have heard that Army Painter Strongtone Ink is even better than Devlan Mud. I might try that.

Agrax Earthshade as mentioned above replaced Devlan Mud but I find it significantly weaker and doesnt give as striking an effect, that said it pools better in the recesses so its something of a give and take.

Shades are not washes. I really wish people would get that through their heads. Shades function much like inks in that they have very little surface tension and flow to the cracks and recesses quite quickly. Glazes have high surface tension, cover like washes, but are far less opaque and don't pool in the recesses well enough to have a decent shade effect.

If you want a Devlin Mud replacement, you're going to have to go to Army Painter. That or find a LGS that somehow still has some on their shelf.

The new shades definitely have slightly different properties to the old washes and I've found I have to use a slightly different technique in applying them, but they give much the same end result. The reason Agrax is a poor replacement for Devlan is less about shades vs washes and more about the fact Agrax is simply a different colour. I did a comparison of which you can see the photograph in my gallery...

Ok, so hormagaunt in bottom right is painted Devlan Mud over white, genestealer in bottom left is Agrax over white. You can see they're 2 completely different colours, Devlan is a very dark brown and Agrax is a medium brown.

The top two images show some homebrew mixes, top left is 3:2 Agrax:Nuln Oil, which is a lot closer to Devlan but still not there. The top right is 3:5 Agrax:Nuln, which is getting pretty close to Devlan. The only real flaw is that Devlan is slightly more reddish in tone, so if I were pedantic I might mix a bit of a flesh tone in as well or maybe a red wash to get it a bit closer, however like with all colour matching, getting an exact match is almost impossible.

For general all-purpose washing that previously I used Devlan, I've swapped to 3:5 Agrax (I have a pot of it mixed up) and I can barely tell the difference. If you check out my gallery, that's what I used for my Zombies.

For my Tyranids, where Devlan is more of a stain over either white or bone, I'm sticking to using some of the old pots of Devlan I still have around as though 3:5 Agrax looks close, it's different enough to notice in that situation (if you paint a wash over white, that's when you notice the differences the most). So I'm keeping all my Devlan for my 'nids and using 3:5 Agrax for everything else.

"Citadel Shades are specially formulated to flow over other paints and into the recesses on your miniatures, defining details and accentuating recesses. Once applied, they dry to provide a very effective, matte shading for your models."

Sounds like a wash to me! Im not really sure what you think a wash is?

Yeah, that's probably the better option than mixing Agrax and Nuln like my post was saying, it's just I had already done my experimentation and mixed up the pot 3:5 Agrax before i read about army painter's strong tone being the same, so I might as well use it

Agreed. I think the wash looks good. Just a future reference. Also, from the warp is a god send on all my painting. Good luck. Also, my buddy will like the look of your nids. He wants the earthy tones and that is exactly what he's looking for.

+1 for strong tone. It's exactly the same stuff, but you get more of it for less money
and dark tone is badab black.

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

Yeah, I did my experimentation the week that the new paints were released and I think I read that article a day or two after I had already mixed up my Devlan replacement, lol. If I do ever run out of Devlan for my 'nids I'll definitely grab some strong tone though.

Agrax isn't actually that bad of a paint, it has it's place and I've found a few uses for it in different armies I collect (used it for dirtying up my Leman Russ), GW were silly for calling it a Devlan replacement, because it's not even close and I think it's received a lot of hate because of that even though it's actually not a bad colour in it's own right.
