I'm curious about the large number of kroot. What is the intended use for them?

i'd also think that more FW would be nice.

I'm not such a huge fan of Fire Warriors.

Let me rephrase that, I'm not such a huge fan of Tau troops that being said, I find that when people see 40 Kroot Carnivores, they tend to shoot at them. Which is good, since there are lots of them, and its generally a waste of ammo to kill Kroot. It gives the army a high model count, and causes problems for highly elite army lists.

Kroot are cheap, they allow me to put a lot of wounds on the table, and they don't need a ride to be effective (making them even cheaper)

The other thing is, in a pinch, they're actually really effective in CC. They are what they are... but 60 attacks on the charge is 60 attacks. It's particularly good if I can catch orks without the charge (they probably just wiped out a squad of suits) or if I can assault guardsmen.

I like the utility of their infiltration, and against infiltrators (Genestealers etc) I can deny a lot of area with 40 well spaced bodies.

Also, they stand in front of suits and provide cover.

And finally: I have 99 (I lost 1) fully painted Kroot Carnivores from my old Chapter Approved army. I like Kroot a lot, they're my favorite models

Lose the Dpods on all vehicles now that moving gives you the exact same save, freeing up some points.

You could use some Blacksun filters on the hammerheads and the broadsides, as well as the commander if he is joining the plasma+burst suits. I don't see the need for the BK on the commander either.

Only a single suit needs a blacksun filter for the whole unit to benefit, so for the deathrains you may want to consider flamers as a third hardpoint for a point more. Great for overwatch and some emergency anti horde for 2 points more, if you can find them.

If you have any spare points you could invest in some kroot hounds if you own the models.

CJ,
I'm totally on board with 3 of Dr. Sterling's points.
1. One BSF per Deathrain crew & flamers or 0 cost DCs instead (to spend points elsewhere)
2. DisPods nearly obsolete, so toss
3. BSF on all Railguns
4. Hounds? Eh, don't own any, so 'no comment'.

I'll add:

1. a recommendation for Target Locks on the Railheads, so the BCs give troops love and the RG scores your First Blood.
2. 'Vre upgrades - yeah, damn near worthless in 5e, but now there's Precision Shot. So, maybe just one promotion for a BC/PR dude?

Otherwise, it looks to be a good TAC. I'd ask if you know your local meta, or is it so large that pretty much anything can show up?

Also, check with the TO in advance to be sure on the PathFinders being able to use MarkerLights on Fliers, or at least work out the mechanics with him. Yeah, the MLs will need 6s to 'hit' the fliers, but then they should work normally after that to increase BS ('Snap Fire' being BS1) and/or scour out some of the 'Jink' Cover Save.

Exactly what I was looking for, I took a brief hiatus when 6e came out, so the subtle stuff is what I'm missing.

Here's what I've got, with all the adjustments. I own Kroot Hounds (they're acutally carnivores with skink arms and greenstuff talons and claws), but the points just aren't there.

Added stims to the Shas'El since FNP seems to have gotten a sidebuff? I thought Target Locks were completely FAQ'd out of service?

Looks good, but by my math you are 5 points over. Easily fixed by dropping the crisis shas'vre to a team leader. Obviously there are other options to shave upgrades here and there.

The consensus on target locks are that the ones in the normal armory do nothing, but the ones in the vehicle armory do still works.

I suggested kroot hounds because if you were planning on using the kroot as meatshields and maybe assault the hounds do the job better having the same # of attacks and I5(hitting before MEQ) at the cost of losing shooting. Being that kroot guns are rapid fire, it means you can shoot or assault, not both. Hounds are cheaper, you can get 7 hounds instead of 6 kroot if you just want bodies.

I think kroot are still a decent choice in 6th ed but cover going to 5+ really does hurt them. Unfortunately for the poor kroot, most armies have a way round cover i.e. TFC, flamers, barrage weapons.

Like you I also used them as an 'assault' unit but I think due to overwatch and restrictions on assault when outflanking and infiltrating that this might not be such a viable tactic anymore. An outflank vehicle assault was one of the best things about Kroot, sadly no longer possible.

Of course they can still lay down 40 S4 shots which is nice, my current thinking is stick a farseer with either doom or the primaris divination power. Not only greatly enhances their shooting, but means they never run (which, as every Tau knows, is what kroot do best!).

One comment for you. for 8pts you could change one of the deathrain crisis suits to a team leader with a flamer and bsf. I'm at work atm, but aren't kroot hounds 6pts? Don't know how many you have, but if you can change out 8 kroots in each unit for hounds, then you have the points to have crisis suit team leaders with flamers and a better close combat unit.

As far as Target Locks go, it's in the FAQ:

Page 28 - Armoury, Target Lock.
This piece of wargear no longer has any effect.

The tanks' TL entry ain't on page 28.
