Hey everybody, I am playing in a 1750 tournament at the end of October and I wanted to start fiddling with a list now to gear up. I know that the new chaos book is right around the corner and it would be most prudent to wait for it to come out to make up a list, but I am impatient. Plus my spiky marines have been shelved for the last few months as I kept waiting for the codex and I'd like to take them out for a few strolls in 6th edition.

So the general idea is that the transports go up the board together seeking to get into bolter/plasma/melta range of the enemy. Meanwhile the obliterators drop in to multi-melta things up close or flamer troops, whatever the immediate need happens to be. The hell blades are my anti-air units, or transport hunters if no flyers are available to shoot. Finally, the sorcerer (who would roll on some chart for a power) and the raptors try to melta things/harass stragglers.

Forgeworld is in at this tournament, so I could be convinced to get other chaos units that are not in the list as my birthday is coming up.

Forgot to add, I'm not taking Daemon Princes even though they are awesome. Despite my desire to win, my fluffiness will not allow it.

Why not drop an oblit squad and take a defiler, then split the other squad into 2 separate oblits as shown:

Defiler - 150
Oblit - 75
Oblit - 75

This gives you a nice battle cannon template whilst maintaining flexiibility.

W/L/D = 23/0/0 (6th/5th)
W/L/D = 17/0/0 (6th)

I think splitting up the oblits to individual units makes them too fragile. I'm already anticipating that in my current loadout they will not survive a single game. However, in a pair with 4 wounds they might make it a round or two after they arrive to continue to bug the enemy. Alone they will die too quickly. Plus, if I land outside of melta range, but I am still in multi-melta range I get two shots to hit instead of just one. A little in built redundancy.

As for the defiler, I've never ran one, it just seems the thing is too fragile to live very long.

Not a fan of that plan. The defiler is way more vulnerable than the obliterators, and less flexible. Remember that the obliterators have twin-linked assault weapons also - hard to beat that, coming down on a deepstrike. Battle Cannon is hamstrung by it's AP3 and the prominence of terminators right now.

Ok, I played a game with the list that I provided.

I played Eldar who brought three flyers. Two Nightwings and a Phoenix.

We played a Nova mission with Objectives as primary, table quarters as secondary and kill points as tertiary.

Due to some real poor decisions with my raptors and sorcerer they were killed off by turn 2. However, I was still in contention to win through the last turn and if I managed to beat up some dire avengers in close combat with a depleted squad of marines I would have won. As it was we tied all the possible goals and the Eldar won on victory points thanks to First Blood and Slay the Warlord.

As I was starting to suspect before the game, the Hell Blades were awful. When you break it down, those things are just BS 3 flying quad guns with a 2 hull point AV 10 frame. Between the two of them they stripped 3 hull points off the flyers. The only Eldar flyer that I shot down was thanks to a lucky plasma hit from the ground.

As it was the stars of the game were the basic marines and the obliterators.

So if the basic chaos marine gets cheaper in the new codex I will be trying to cram as many of those guys into my list as possible.

The awfulness of my flyers leaves me with a conundrum though. The current codex has nothing to deal with flyers and the forgeworld options don't appear to be very good.

The flak missiles seem like a crappy choice too. It's 1 shot autocannons that hit on normal BS. It will be expensive to bring enough of them to deal with AV 10 flyers, let alone with AV 12 ones. And how many havocs will you need to deal with a 3-6 Necron flyer list?

I guess the Dragon might be our best hope to deal with flyers. God I hope that thing doesn't look silly. Even if it doesn't look like it belongs in Fantasy more than in 40k, I'm not sure how great it will be since it needs to get into base contact to knockout flyers.

I guess we'll just need to wait and see.

If anyone has suggestions, I'd be grateful.
