Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

So, we all know that Infinity is a really tactical game and that you're constantly developing new tactics and figuring out ways to respond to your opponent's tactics.
So, I thought we could have a thread where we tell each other what happened during our games and what we realized from it. Think of this thread as a place to reflect upon what went right/wrong and why it did so.

Great idea CF!

I havent played myself, but even from reading Bat Reps on the Main site, the thing ive (seen) a fair few players learn is:

'if the opponent has one (or more) AD troopers, for Gods sake, dont leave a flank/your rear exposed with no ARO cover...'

Total Reaction Remotes then mysteriously appear in the next list...

Today I learned the power of mines dropped en masse to control the movement of enemy forces. They love small corridors, and are great traps.

Mixed with suppression fire, they're even worse.

Never trust a yu jing player. They tend to blow their men up.

It's even worse when they leave the model undercoated black, so you can't tell who will blow up.

Regardless the blowing themselves up never trust them anyway. To many stalking in the shadow ninja types and invisible rocket launchers appearing out of nowhere.

The biggest thing ive learn't is to check the SWC cost of your new toys before you buy em because they wont all fit in one force if you don't

Got two 200 pointers in last weekend, using my Anathemo-SEF (non-sectorial shasvastii led by an anathematic) vs my usual Aleph opponent. We both learned quite a bit - such as it's really awesome having a laptop handy for the Infinity Wiki (and his Aleph stats ) - but I suppose I do have more specific takeaways:

Game One
* Plasma rifles are fantastic! Range isn't the best but the splash damage was superb for taking out nearby myrmidons, who otherwise I'd really struggle to hit with ODD + cover.
* Don't stand your dudes so close together, particularly the ones with ODD
* Rambo-ing a hugely expensive unit through the enemy army is a lot of fun, as beardy of a tactic as it is

Game Two
* Dice Happen: anathematic plasma (3x 10 to hit) vs sniper ARO (1x 9 to hit) resulted in a dead 87 point model over three volleys of fire (her DA crit on the big guy didn't help!)
* There is no aiming bonus in INF, so the anathematic standing there and raining fire into the sniper, instead of pushing up to engage the devabot he was really after - OR getting into the sniper's short range where it doesn't get +3 to hit - was kinda dumb
* Dice Happen Part 2: my noctifer survived multiple flame attaks from devabots, rolling his 14 armor check like a boss (but losing his TO) whilst dropping robots with hot spitfire love
* The 'shasvastii' rule is not a throwaway fluff thing: my force ended up in retreat some time after losing the anathematic (a downside of being so expensive is that he's 43.5% of my total points!), when in reality I had never placed a seed token and made the Aleph clean them up for the VP
* Rambo-ing is not everything, coordinating advance and being less aggressive would have helped keep things under control. (That or awesome dice )

I also knew this one already, but I figured I should post it up:
* Shas suffer horribly against MSV, yet have no access to any of their own. I'm playing CA right now (rather than SEF) so I can play with the big cool stuff, wondering if I should take a deep breath and look into other non-shas options. I have a vector operator w/ HMG and know he's a stupidly good value ... but that's kinda boring. Pondering a charontid since I'm not afraid of splashing some points around, but every time I keep coming back to how awesome the anathematic is for about the same points (and a way cooler model too). Also thinking about going with an Iskaller w/ HMG to put the fear of AD into people!

Finally, I confirmed a couple things as well: Infinity is hella fun; and I need to paint my gribblies

Hacking Noctifer

Learnde in yesterdays game that I hate Yujing for Blowing up their prisoners. I hate cheap link teams with spitfire, too. And I hate to run an Knight´s army directly against a motherf... hacker with repeaters who immobilizes my men. I learned that even if I got my enemy in a bad position I´m able to loose a game just by running in the wrong directions...

I learned another new skill on Tuesday..............

KNOW YOUR ENEMY.

Keep to this one rule and you will avoid situations where you run your critical TO Camo Hacker right passed the view of your opponents two MSV 2 equipped nasties. (Still cant remember what they were called but they Haqqislam)

Most equipment and skills have a way to be countered and if you know what you are up against then you can plan ahead.

Problem is that I have not really played against Nomad, Combined or Aleph so not really sure what tactics to use against them so i better get reading because this game as getting more and more popular and I expect to see different armies appearing at my club soon.

I'm actually waiting for it to be super popular and gain regular competitive tournaments. It's a really great game competitive-wise, since it doesn't hamper anyone because of their lists and it has tight rules.

Always have a paramedic* as you will be screwed without one.

Eh not technically true. Peramedics have a TERRIBLE success rate so there is a good chance that the orders you spend to heal a model with the high risk of killing it wasn't worth the orders in the first place.

The campaign of course may change that.

Another game this Saturday! 250 points this time, Anathemo-SEF vs PanO! Was pretty concerned by his force - MSV2 Nisse w/ HMG and MSV3 Aquila w/ rifle smelled like certain doom to my squishy camo gribbles, on top of 360 total reaction HMG remote and AD Akal w/ HMG promising swift alien butt whoop

As the game got started, his first turn saw a general advance, with the Nisse pushing hard for board center. My CA responded by mobilizing Anathematic and crew, then revealing the Malignos sniper, who managed to trash the Nisse, recloak and call it a successful turn. With one MSV down, his Aquila was the next threat - the dude stormed up and engaged the Anathematic in a firefight just across an alley from each other. AP MULTI rounds managed a wound on the EI executioner, but the Anathematic flooded the Aquila with so many nanobots that he was soon eaten away in ARO alone. With the visors accounted for, it was time for the spitfire Noctifer to begin his rampage. Pushing up from the flank, the Noctifer blasted away the Croc that attempted to ambush him, then chased down a Fusilier (which took a ridiculous 3-4 orders to drop, and even then the grunt only died to ARO in his own activation), pausing for a turn before blasting two more Fusiliers (one the PanO LT), the Kamau hacker and the remote in ARO when it attempted to tag him at range. High five to that dude Once the Akal hit, she found herself very nearly the only model on the board (the remote was alive for a few hot minutes), but she was still able to splatter a Seed Soldier paramedic, then discover and ventilate a lurking Aswang. Even with her religiousity keeping her in the game, her time was up: the Anathematic stealthed over and unloaded full plasma, melting the drop trooper and sending the PO on to their next opponent (a nicely painted HAQQ army, which the PO utterly trashed, almost entirely in ARO )

LEARNED
* MSV, especially MSV + HMG, do not auto-win against an entire army of camo tokens. It may not seem like it to you, but this was a pretty big revelation to me, I truly thought I was hosed.
* Whine less, tactics more, roll good dice whenever possible!
* I'd never fired a nanopulsar before - direct damage templates are a really cool option to have (and mitigate bad dice )
* Paramedics (I had two) aren't all that useful for me, with AutoMedikits, Protheon, Dogged and No Wound Incap all over the place. But a grenade launcher + forward observer could be cool ...
* AD troopers (I'd never faced them before) are pretty scary, though also just about as order hungry as I expected. Has me wishing Cadmus were a little more impressively armed
* I really need to paint my dudes! Going up against beautifully painted stuff with primed black things makes me sad.

Looks like every other Saturday is on for INF at my LGS, so even more reason to paint my 8 alien gribblies up post haste

Hugging in a straight line behind a wall or clustering up = template bait. It's a happy medium on deloyment that takes a while to get use to.

Last night I learned (er, well today when I relooked at the rules) that x-visors do nothing for assault pistols :(

Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

Let's see... played two games yesterday against Military Orders, one with my Shasvastii and one with my Acontecimento.
1: Combat Jump is brutal, and you don't even need a HMG to do it well (my Akalis jumped in first turn and killed three guys, one of whom was the Lieutenant).
2: TAGs are really fun to use (Spent three orders on my Dragao first turn. He killed three guys).
3: It's not called the Shock Army for nothing
4: Hide your Lieutenant, even if he is kitted for combat. You never know where the TO sniper is...
5: TAGs are brutal, but not indestructible.
6: Pay attention to your mission! (Infinity YAMS).
Oddly enough, I didn't learn as much during my Shasvastii match. It went perfect, with first turn Speculo killing his Lieutenant along with 3 or so other guys and second turn destroying everything else...
